Wakefield is a metropolitan borough with the status of a city in the metropolitan county of West Yorkshire in England . The administrative seat is the city of the same name Wakefield . Other significant places in the borough are Castleford , Featherstone , Hemsworth , Horbury , Knottingley , Normanton , Ossett , Pontefract , South Kirkby and Moorthorpe and South Elmsall .

The reorganization of the borders and the competencies of the local authorities resulted in the formation of the Metropolitan Borough in 1974. The county borough of Wakefield, the municipal boroughs Castleford, Ossett and Pontefract, the urban districts of Featherstone, Hemsworth, Horbury, Knottingley, Normanton and Stanley, the rural district of Wakefield and parts of the rural districts of Hemsworth and Osgoldcross were merged. These local authorities were previously part of the West Riding of Yorkshire county .

In 1986, Wakefield became a de facto unitary authority when the central government dissolved the county’s superordinate administration. Wakefield remained part of West Yorkshire for ceremonial purposes , as well as for individual higher-level functions such as police, fire services and public transport.

politics

For the purposes of electing Wakefield Council , Wakefield is divided into five constituencies: Wakefield East, Wakefield North, Wakefield Rural, Wakefield South and Wakefield West. As of the last local election in 2012, Wakefield's council has consisted of 52 Labor MPs and nine Conservative MPs .

For general election , Wakefield is divided into three constituencies: Normanton, Pontefract and Castleford, Hemsworth and Wakefield, all of which are held by the Labor Party.
