The Anglo-Saxon villages of South Kirkby and Moorthorpe were first mentioned in the Domesday Book in 1086 . Until the beginning of the industrial revolution , the settlements were dominated by agriculture .
South Kirkby and Moorthorpe later made a living from coal mining and textile industries . In 2009 the city had 10,979 inhabitants.
