1974, a two-level management system, consisting of was in England counties ( counties ) and Districts introduced. Six metropolitan areas became Metropolitan Counties, which were divided into Metropolitan Districts. These districts were given the opportunity to apply to the Queen for borough status . So did all the districts and thus became Metropolitan Boroughs. In contrast to the non-metropolitan districts, the competencies of the metropolitan boroughs also include school supervision.
In 1986 the councils of the Metropolitan Counties were abolished and their duties were largely transferred to the Metropolitan Boroughs. These are in fact equal to the unitary authorities , but are usually not called that.
Some Metropolitan Borough also have the status of a City .
From 1899 to 1965, the then London boroughs were also referred to as Metropolitan Boroughs . After the formation of Greater London , these were replaced by the London Boroughs .
