Administrative counties of Scotland
Administrative counties (Engl. Administrative counties ) were administrative units in Scotland . They were formed in 1889 and administered by a county council . They were replaced by regions in 1975 , these in turn by Council Areas in 1996 .
The boundaries of the administrative counties were based on those of the traditional Scottish counties , with a few exceptions. The most striking difference is the union of Ross-shire and Cromartyshire, which has been split into different parts, to form Ross and Cromarty . The numerous exclaves and enclaves have been cleared, with the exception of part of Dunbartonshire which lies between Stirlingshire and Lanarkshire .
The four cities of Aberdeen , Dundee , Edinburgh and Glasgow formed separate " counties of cities ". These do not appear on the map.
