Location of Kinross-shire in Scotland

Kinross-shire ( Scottish Gaelic Siorrachd Cheann Rois ) is one of the traditional counties in the east of Scotland . The historical capital and eponymous place is the city of Kinross . Kinross-shire is geographically dominated by Loch Leven , famous for Loch Leven Castle , where the Scottish Queen Maria Stuart was imprisoned in 1567/68 .

As an administrative county, Kinross-shire existed between 1890 and 1929 and was then jointly administered with the neighboring county of Perthshire . In 1975, both counties went up in the Perth and Kinross District of the Tayside region . The Tayside region was dissolved in 1996; since then Perth and Kinross has been a unitary authority .
