Wigtownshire ( Scottish Gaelic Siorrachd Bhaile na h-Uige ) is a traditional county in the extreme southwest of Scotland. The historic capital and eponymous place is the city of Wigtown , other important places are Newton Stewart , Stranraer and Whithorn .

As an administrative county, Wigtownshire existed between 1890 and 1975 and then formed the Wigtown District of the Dumfries and Galloway region . The Dumfries and Galloway region was converted into a Unitary Authority in 1996 . Wigtownshire is still one of the Lieutenancy Areas of Scotland today .
