Dumfriesshire ( Scottish Gaelic Siorrachd Dhùn Phrìs ) is one of the traditional counties of Scotland , located in the south of Scotland on the border with England . The administrative seat and eponymous place was the city of Dumfries . The county historically consisted of the three landscapes Annandale, Eskdale and Nithsdale.

Dumfriesshire existed as an administrative county between 1890 and 1975 and then became part of the Dumfries and Galloway region . The Dumfries and Galloway region was converted into a Council Area in 1996 . Dumfriesshire is still one of the Lieutenancy Areas of Scotland today .
