Ruthwell is a small town in the Scottish Council Area Dumfries and Galloway . It is located about 16 kilometers southeast of Dumfries and ten kilometers west of Annan near the north bank of the Solway Firth near the confluence of Lochar Water .

history

With the Ruthwell Cross , which dates back to the 8th century, Ruthwell is the site of an early Christian wayside cross. It originated at the time of the conquest along the Solway Firth by Northumbrian troops. It is now in Ruthwell Parish Church . In 1509 the village received the rights of a Burghs of Barony . Market law was also linked to this. By the late 19th century, Ruthwell had lost that status. At that time there was no significant economic or commercial activity in the village.

The clergyman Henry Duncan set up Scotland's first savings bank in Ruthwell in 1810. The Ruthwell Museum , which is dedicated to this topic, is now located in the building . In 1831 there were 1216 residents in Ruthwell, the number fell continuously over the course of the century. At the time of the 1961 census, 96 people were still living in Ruthwell.

traffic

Located in a sparsely populated peripheral region of Scotland, Ruthwell is only connected to the road network via a side road. This leads to the B724 and B725 highways, which end in Annan and Dumfries, respectively. In the north they connect the village to the A75 ( Stranraer - Gretna Green ). In 1846 Ruthwell got its own station on the newly opened Glasgow, Dumfries and Carlisle Railway . When the line closed in 1965, the station was abandoned.
