Annan ( Gaelic : Annain ) is a town in the Scottish Council Area Dumfries and Galloway . It is located about 25 km east-southeast of Dumfries near the north coast of the Solway Firth in the traditional county of Dumfriesshire . In 2011 Annan had 8960 inhabitants.

The Annandale whiskey distillery was located near Annan between 1836 and 1919 , and was restored in 2007 and has been in operation again since 2014.

The A75 , which connects Stranraer with Gretna , touches Annan in the north and connects the city to the long-distance network. The Annan River , which runs west of the city, is crossed by two road bridges and a railway bridge at Annan level. Annan Station was previously served by the Glasgow and South Western Railway on the Glasgow, Dumfries and Carlisle Railway . Today First ScotRail operates the station. Trains on the Glasgow South Western Line run to the station regularly.
