Ruthwell Museum

The Ruthwell Museum , also Savings Banks Museum , is a museum in the Scottish town of Ruthwell in the Council Area Dumfries and Galloway . In 1971 the structure was included in the Scottish monument lists in the highest monument category A.

description

In 1810 the clergyman Henry Duncan set up Scotland's first savings bank in this building. The small museum is dedicated to this topic. Admission is free.

The museum is on the main street of Ruthwell. The building could have been built around 1760. Originally, it was probably two independent cottages that were joined to form a unit. The north-facing fronts are three axes wide. Instead of the entrance door, a window was installed on the eastern building in the course of the 19th century. The masonry consists of quarry stone and is limed along the facades. Building openings are color-coded with bezels . The building closes with a slate-covered gable roof with two skylights . The chimneys have been removed.
