Eskdalemuir ( Esk Valley Bog ) is a place in the Scottish Council Area Dumfries and Galloway .
geography
Eskdalemuir is located within a humid high moor area that is mainly used for sheep breeding and forestry .
The place is on the banks of the White Esk , which connects several kilometers south with the Black Esk to the Esk .
Attractions
Weather station
Eskdalemuir is known for its weather station, where Lewis Fry Richardson - the inventor of numerical weather forecast - once worked. The place holds the British rainfall record. On June 26, 1953, 80 mm of precipitation was measured there within 30 minutes.
Tibetan monastery
The Samye Ling Tibetan Monastery ( Kagyu Samyé Ling Monastery and Tibetan Center ) was established in 1967 on the site of a former hunting lodge.
Excavations
In Eskdalemuir, archaeologists discovered two stone circles ( Girdle Stanes , Loupin Stanes ) as well as finds from Roman times and medieval fortifications. The stone box of King Shaw's Grave is also by the village .
