Canonbie is a village in the Scottish Council Area Dumfries and Galloway or the Eskdale district of the traditional county of Dumfriesshire . It is located around 20 kilometers northeast of Annan am Esk, not far from the Scottish-English border.
history
Located in the contested Scottish-English border area, there were various fortifications in the area. For example, the Tower House Gilnockie Tower was a Wehbau of the Armstrong clan .
In the Middle Ages , probably in the middle of the 12th century, the Canonbie Priory was established as a small priory . The complex, which is subordinate to Jedburgh Abbey , was dissolved by Henry VIII in the course of the Scottish Reformation in 1544 . It disappeared completely today. A parish church in Canonbie was described as early as 1220. In the early 1820s, today's Canonbie Parish Church was built nearby .
During the 19th and 20th centuries, coal and lime were mined in the area.
traffic
The A7 , which connects Edinburgh with Carlisle in England , passes Canonbie in the west. It connects the village directly to the trunk road network. With the 1793-built Gilnockie Bridge and the proceeds derived from the 1850s Byreburnfoot Bridge , two road bridges were along the Esk near Canonbie.
During the 19th century Canonbie got its own station along a branch line of the Border Union Railway . In the course of the 1960s the line was abandoned and the station closed.
