history
Moffat was a market for the wool trade for a long time, and a ram statue donated in 1875 is a reminder of this to this day.
From the 19th century until shortly after World War I , Moffat was Scotland's premier spa thanks to the sulphurous waters in the area. There are still many hotels in Moffat today.
In 1935 Moffat hit the headlines when the remains of two bodies were found in a pool. Identification of victims by the Scottish pathologist John Glaister led to the conviction of the murderer Buck Ruxton from Lancaster (Lancashire) and were a milestone in the forensic medical examiner.
