Nairnshire , also called County of Nairn ( Scottish Gaelic : Siorrachd Inbhir Narann ), was a county and a statistical district in the Scottish Highlands around the city of Nairn , which existed as an administrative county until 1975 . In 1975 Nairnshire became a district of the Highland region . Today Nairnshire is part of the Highland Council Area .

Until 1891, the county also included some exclaves in neighboring counties, the largest in Inverness-shire , the second largest in Ross-shire around the settlement of Urquhart on the Black Isle peninsula and other smaller areas in Morayshire . In total, the county covered an area of 518 km². The Local Government Act of 1889 made the exclaves part of the surrounding counties.
