Black Isle ( Scottish Gaelic : an t- Eilean Dubh ) is a stretch of land in the eastern Scottish Highlands within the former county of Ross and Cromarty . In English the name is used almost exclusively in connection with the definite article (" the Black Isle").
On the Black Isle is the village of Cromarty as well as Conon Bridge , Muir of Ord , Munlochy , Avoch , Rosemarkie , Fortrose , Tore and Culbokie .
geography
Despite the name, the Black Isle ( German "the Black Island" ) is a peninsula - in Gaelic, the word eilean both an island and a peninsula - and is on three sides of fjords surrounded by water. The Cromarty Firth to the north, the Beauly Firth to the south and the Moray Firth to the east. The western border of the Black Isle is marked by various rivers. The River Conon separates Maryburgh (about 1.5 km from Dingwall ) from Conon Bridge , which is the first village on Black Isle from the northwestern side. The southwest boundary is either a small tributary of the River Beauly , which separates the village of Beauly (in Inverness-shire ) and Muir of Ord (on Black Isle and in Ross and Cromarty ), thereby simultaneously marking the beginning of the Black Isle and the two Demarcating counties from one another. Alternatively, the River Beauly itself is viewed as the border to the Black Isle, which means that Beauly is also included in the Black Isle, despite its official affiliation to Inverness-shire.
particularities
The Black Isle was one of the first areas of the Northern Highlands to experience agricultural innovations and was populated by lowland shepherds and farmers, especially from the northeast.
In 2002 the island was the scene of a civil protest against genetically modified agriculture.
Chanonry of Ross Castle and Ormond Castle once stood on Black Isle . Chanonry of Ross was completely destroyed in the 18th century, there are no remains today. Ormond Castle now only exists as a small ruin; it was torn down in the middle of the 17th century by order of Oliver Cromwell , because he had his own fortress built in Inverness , a few kilometers south . On the peninsula of are Cairn of Belmaduthy , the Cairn of Balnaguie and Carn glass .
economy
The Black Isle is mainly used for agriculture, forestry and tourism. There's the Glen Ord whiskey distillery and the small Black Isle Brewery Ltd. that makes different types of beer. Every year on August 1st, the Muir of Ord hosts the agricultural exhibition "The Black Isle Show". Black Isle also serves as a commuter residential area for Inverness.
