Ormond Castle (Scotland)
Ormond Castle

Ormond Castle , also Avoch Castle is an Outbound hilltop castle above the village of Avoch on the Black Isle in the Scottish county of Ross and Cromarty (now part of the administrative Highland ).

It is conceivable that this was one of two castles known to have been built as royal fortresses during the reign of King William the Lion on the Black Isle.

history

De Moravia

In the 13th century the castle was in the hands of the De Moravia clan of Petty . From there the clan ruled large estates across Moray . Andrew de Moravia enlisted the men of Moray to join King John Balliol at Ormond Castle after his dishonor before King Edward I of England at the start of the Scottish Wars of Independence .

Douglas

Heiress of Petty's De Moravias was Joanna of Bothwell ; In 1362 she married Archibald Douglas , Lord of Galloway and later 3rd  Earl of Douglas , who claimed her lands and title "de jure uxoris" (German: from the right of marriage). Ormond Castle was the caput of the Baronate of Ormonde , which was converted into an earldom in 1445 for Hugh Douglas, Earl of Ormonde , the third son of James Douglas, 7th Earl of Douglas . After the demise of the "Black" Douglases after the Battle of Arkinholm in 1455 and the execution of the Earl, his possessions, as well as those of his brothers, were forfeited. Ormond Castle was taken over by the Crown and loaned back to George Douglas, 4th Earl of Angus . The Earl of Angus, a "Red" Douglas, was a relative and enemy of the "Black" Douglases and became the new force in this mighty house. The title Earl of Ormonde was created in 1651 for the elder son of the 1st Marquess of Douglas , but lapsed in 1715 with the death of Archibald Douglas, 3rd Earl of Ormonde , who died of his wounds at the Battle of Sheriffmuir .

Munro

In 1568 Andrew Munro, 5th of Milntown , also known as "Andrew Munro of Newmore " during his father's lifetime , acquired Ormond Castle and the lands of Suddie and Avoch under the feudal rule of the Earls of Angus and Ormonde.

Cromwell

In the 1650s, Ormond Castle was destroyed by Oliver Cromwell's troops so that he could build his fortress in Inverness . Nothing is left of the castle today.
