Newmore Castle

Newmore Castle is the ruin of a low castle north of Alness in the Scottish county of Ross and Cromarty (now part of the Highland administrative division ).

history

Newmore Castle is first mentioned in 1560. It then belonged to the Munros of Milntown , specifically Andrew Munro, 5th of Milntown , who was also called Andrew Munro of Newmore during his father's lifetime .

In the 17th century the castle belonged to another line of the Munro clan. Its most famous owner was George Munro, 1st of Newmore , the brother of Sir Robert Munro, 3rd Baronet of Foulis , chief of the Munros clan. George Munro commanded the forces of King Charles II of England after the Stuart Restoration . When his public duties permitted, George Munro received visitors to the castle with "rough but hearty" soldiers' entertainment.

Newmore Castle remained in the hands of this line of Munros for several generations, but fell to the Munros of Culrain in 1763 . During the 19th century the castle fell into disrepair.

description

Newmore Castle was once a three-story tower house with a stair tower . Today only the ground floor is preserved, which covers an area of 10.9 × 7.3 meters and consists of three rooms covered with a barrel roof . The 0.6 meter thick walls still stand up to a height of 2.5 meters. There are also the lower remains of the stair tower that once led to the upper floors, for example to the knight's hall . The entrance on the ground floor, protected by loopholes , has also been preserved.
