As restoration ( Engl. Restoration ) is in English history refers to the period 1660-1689, as among the kings Charles II. And James II. From the house Stuart during the English Civil War abolished the monarchy was restored.

The possibility of this restoration arose after the death of the lord protector Oliver Cromwell in 1658, because his system of government had proven to be unsustainable and his son Richard had proven to be an unsuitable successor.

The era ended in 1689 with the Glorious Revolution , in which the Catholic James II was expelled and his Protestant daughter Maria II and her husband William of Orange ascended the English throne.
