The Belœil Castle ( French : Château de Belœil ) is located in the municipality of Belœil in the province of Hainaut , Belgium . Since 1394 is the castle owned by the high noble family Ligne .

history

After the castle came into the possession of the Ligne family in 1394, it was converted into the family seat in the 15th century. Initially constructed as a fortress, the building was expanded into a multi-storey castle based on the French model in the 17th and 18th centuries and two wings were added. In 1664 the construction of an elaborate garden began in the immediate vicinity of the castle. The area of ​​this facility is 25 hectares .

During the New Year celebrations in 1900, a fire broke out in the castle, which destroyed large parts of the building. The library with over 20,000 books and 3,500 manuscripts and the art collection were saved. In 1906 the castle was rebuilt under the direction of the French architect Paul-Ernest Sanson .
