The province of Hainaut ( French Province de Hainaut , Walloon Hinnot , West Flemish Enegouwn , Dutch Provincie Henegouwen ) is a Belgian province. It belongs to the Walloon Region and the French Community of Belgium . The name is linked to the historic county of Hainaut and is derived from the river Haine ( German Henne , Dutch Hene ).
The provincial capital is Mons (Dutch and German Bergen ), the largest city in the province is Charleroi with around 201,000 inhabitants. In the past, Hainaut was characterized by the coal and steel industry (steel production, etc.) and has struggled with the consequences of structural change in the past few decades .
The municipality of Comines-Warneton is an exclave surrounded by West Flanders and France . Facility communities are Comines-Warneton (Komen-Waasten), Enghien (Edingen), Flobecq (Vloesberg) and Mouscron (Moeskroen).

In comparison with the gross domestic product of the European Union expressed in purchasing power standards , the province achieved an index of 77 (EU-25: 100) in 2015, significantly lower than the Belgian average of 119. In 2017, the unemployment rate was 11.4%. Of all the provinces in the country, Hainaut had the highest unemployment.
