Erquelinnes (on pikardisch Erkelene ) is a city and a municipality in the province of Hainaut in Walloon part of Belgium . The name originated from a diminutive of the Latin word Arcus (arch bridge), Arcanina .
The municipality, located directly on the border with France, consists of the villages of Erquelinnes, Bersillies-l'Abbaye, Grand-Reng, Hantes-Wihéries, Montignies-Saint-Christophe and Solre-sur-Sambre . On the other side of the border is the French municipality of Jeumont , which is twinned with cities. Both communities are on the banks of the Sambre . In addition, the tributaries Thure and Hante cross the municipality.
