Manage is a municipality in the province of Hainaut in the Walloon part of Belgium .

The municipality consists (after the merger in 1977) from the localities Manage, Bellecourt, Bois-d'Haine, Fayt-lez-Manage and La Hestre . Its population increased from 21,056 in 1977 to 22,468 in 2012 (2000: 21,864). The place extends over 19.68 km².

history

Originally the region was covered with forests. Presumably Celtic tribes spread here. The names of the localities that make up today's communal unit reflect this former forest cover: Bois-d'Haine, Fayt and La Hestre. These refer to the beech , the tree of the region.

François-Isidore Dupont founded a complex of forges and rolling mills in the then independent Fayt in 1821, which manufactured rails for the emerging railway traffic. This also applies to the first railway line between Mechelen and Brussels . This was facilitated by the coal mining of the municipalities of La Hestre and Bellecourt, which had started 20 years earlier. The prominent citizen Adolphe Dechamps , owner of Scailmont Castle, urged the government to connect Manage to the railway network, which gave the region a further boost.

On December 26, 1842, the Braine-le-Comte-Manage section of the Brussels-Charleroi line was inaugurated. The following year the first train station was built. At first only one line was processed here, but soon it became a junction with the connections: Mons-Manage (1849), Manage-Wavre (1854), Manage-Piéton (1865). By 1890, passenger and freight traffic continued to rise sharply. Several incidents also made it necessary to build a significantly larger train station. Work started in 1900 and lasted a year. At the same time, the entire community experienced an urban redesign: construction of the first streets, construction of a new church, post office and a modern gendarmerie . In 1849 Apollinaire-Adrien Bougard founded a large glassworks . From 1880, other glass manufacturers such as Wauty, Michotte, Hirsch or Castelain followed. Manage's reputation as a center of glass manufacturing strengthened, including a. with perfume bottles , over the decades up to the 1990s, until the last glassworks, Hainaut Cristal SA , which specializes in the manufacture of hollow glass , had to close its doors. Before that, the Walloon government injected a lot of money in order to maintain the glass industry in this part of the country.

The Dutch-Belgian chocolate manufacturer Kwatta (after merging with the local chocolaterie La Compagnie Internationale d'Alimentation in 1913) found its production site in Bois-d'Haine. The large train station was demolished in 1973 and replaced by a functional building.

The city is also known for its "Saint-Bernard" psychiatric clinic , which is now the city's largest employer. Architecturally, the surrounding castles are to be emphasized in Manage, as are the magnificent houses that were built during its industrial history.

Manage borders on the neighboring communities of Chapelle-lez-Herlaimont , La Louvière , Morlanwelz and Seneffe .

geography

The main centers of Manage, in addition to the Manage district itself, are Bellecourt, Bois-d'Haine, Fayt-lez-Manage and La Estre. The town hall is located in Fayt-lez-Manage. First, Bellecourt and La Hestre formed a parish. In 1977 all four villages merged.

Current situation

Like all neighboring cities, Manage suffered a decline in the economy due to the decline of glass manufacturers, mining and the steel industry. In addition, large companies such as La Brugeoise et Nivelles (now Bombardier ) were closed in 2000 and converted into a smaller steel mill. For twenty years, however, commercial areas have been designated that accommodate small to medium-sized companies.

Further restructuring measures should concern the station. The station was one of the most important railway hubs in Belgium, but has lost its importance for Manage due to the decline in local industries. However, the national railway company SNCB decided to keep the station, as enough goods and travelers continue to use the station. Only the ticket offices were closed. The purpose of the station concourse, built in the 1970s, was also intended to be used by local clubs, but this was never actually implemented.

Manage is located on the A7 ( E19 ) and A15 ( E42 ) motorways .

Culture and sport

  • There is an annual fair in Manage and its districts .
  • The carnival is especially celebrated on Easter Tuesday in the Manages center.
  • The “Le Caudia” wine foam festival in Bois-d'Haine, where the participants dress up as farmers and cooks, walk through the streets and finally prepare the chaudeau (“Caudia” in the local dialect) together. This is first offered to the pastor before it is distributed to the residents of the village. According to the first sources, this festival has existed since 1411.
  • The White Ball ("Le bal blanc") in the district of Fayt-lez-Manage. The participants dress exclusively in white.
  • When it comes to sporting activities, the Manage tennis club can be found in the village, and pelota play traditionally enjoys a high status in the region. A popular place and meeting point for this used to be the areas in front of the train station.

religion

Manage has six Catholic churches, two of them in the old parish of Manage: Saintes-Catherine-et-Philomène and Saint-Jean-Baptiste in Longsart. Longsart Church, built in 1905, was demolished in summer 2014. However, it was closed in May 2010 as it threatened to collapse due to the unstable nature of the soil.

There is also an Evangelical Protestant church in La Hestre as well as two mosques, one in Manage and one in Fayt-lez-Manage.

politics

town hall

The municipality of Manage was created in 1977 from the amalgamation of the municipalities of Fayt-lez-Manage, La Hestre, Bois d'Haine, Bellecourt and Manage. A dispute broke out about who should direct the fortunes of the new unit from among the four previous town halls. It was the mayor of Manage, the doctor Willy Francq , who convinced everyone that the previous place Manage was the most densely populated place at the time and was then elected mayor of the new municipality. The previous mayor of La Hestre, Ivan Massart, was installed as the first councilor and followed Francq into office in 1982 when he resigned due to illness.
