The castle tone ( ital. Castel San Pietro ) is a ruined castle in Trentino , Italy .

location

The ruins of the former hilltop castle are located at 864  m slm near the village of Vigo di Ton, which belongs to the municipality of Ton in the Non Valley ( Italian Val di Non ). It stands on a ledge in the Valle San Pietro, a smaller side valley of the Non Valley after which the castle is named in Italian.

history

The origins of the castle go back to Roman times , when a tower was built on the rock spur to control a Roman road below , which led from the Adige Valley over the Passo Roccapiana into the Val di Non. This is still indicated by the Italian name Strada Romana , which the local population uses to describe the path that leads under the castle ruins.

On the other hand, the facility, now in ruins, dates from the 12th century and was built by the ministerials of the Bishop of Trento, the Lords of Thun , who guarded the Val di Non and was first mentioned in a document in 1338. The castle was already deserted at the end of the 17th century, the Lords of Thun instead took care of their Castel Thun, which is closer to Ton on a hill in the valley . Until the 18th century, masses were only held in the castle chapel, which was consecrated to St. Peter .

description

Today the castle has largely fallen apart and covered by vegetation. Only the characteristic round castle tower, which is around 15 meters high, is relatively well preserved. Otherwise, only a few outer walls can be clearly made out, as well as the foundations of the apse of the former castle chapel.
