The castle in the area formerly belonging to Austria was the ancestral seat of the noble family von Thun and Hohenstein , who owned the castle from the second half of the 13th century until the death of Count Zdenko von Thun in 1982.

Previously, the Lords of Thun (Tono / Tonne) had received a castle on the hill “Vision” at Pass Rochetta from the Bishop of Trento as a fief since 1199, which was called “Castel Visione”. Today's Castel Thun was first named "Belvesini", then the names "Castro Novesini" and "Castrum Toni" became established. In addition to Castel Thun, other castles also came into the possession of the family in the century, above all Castel Bragher, Castel San Pietro and Castello di Castelfondo.

After a fire in 1529 the castle was rebuilt, with new fortifications against firearms, such as gun ramps, ramparts and massive bastion towers. In the 1540s, it was reinforced with a new gate on the moat. Around 1600 Marx Sittich von Wolkenstein mentions a wall with 30 cannons. Ton Castle , located just 1.8 km away on a rocky promontory in the Valle San Pietro, a smaller side valley of the Non Valley, was abandoned by the end of the 17th century.

Extensive interior renovations followed from 1792 to 1794. The once medieval castle was transformed into a contemporary castle. With his generous support from Garibaldi , Count Matteo Thun ran into financial difficulties in the 19th century. The castle was threatened with sale or decay. The Bohemian line of Thun, which was still wealthy at the beginning of the 20th century, saved the Castel from decline and bought it in 1926 under Zdenko von Thun. He tried to preserve the castle and its interior and used it as a residence. After the death of the last Count Zdenko Thun in 1982, the Borga family from Mezzolombardo took over the castle and sold it with the historical inventory of the Autonomous Province of Trento. After more than 18 years of restoration, it was officially opened as a museum on April 17, 2010.
