Comines-Warneton ( Dutch : Komen-Waasten ) is a facility municipality in the Walloon province of Hainaut in Belgium and its exclave in the province of West Flanders . The place is separated in the southwest by the Leie (French: Lys ) from its sister community Comines on the French side.

In the time of the Spanish Netherlands , the two districts belonged to the county of Flanders and formed a city. After Louis XIV signed the Peace of Aachen in 1668 , the northern part of the city came to Spain and the part south of the Leie to France. By Vauban the Castle of Comines has been turned into a fortress. Through the Peace of Nijmegen , the northern part also came temporarily to France, only to fall to the Austrian Netherlands after the end of the reign of the Sun King in 1713 through the Peace of Utrecht . The place has shared the history of Belgium since the Congress of Vienna .

Since the Middle Ages, a flourishing linen trade has developed in Comines, thanks to the flax grown in the region , as in the entire area . In 1719 the first factory for the production of linen ribbons was founded in Comines, which over the course of 200 years made the town a world center for ribbon production. Ribbon production reached 400 million meters around 1900. During the First World War , the place was completely destroyed by German troops, any remains were blown up and the industrial machinery was brought to Germany. After 1918, the city was partly rebuilt in the Flemish Neo-Renaissance style.

After the definition of the Belgian language border and the federalization of the entire Belgian state, the municipality is no longer in Flanders, but belongs to Wallonia.
