Thomas Laughlin (born February 14 , 1971 in New York ), better known by his ring name Tommy Dreamer , is an American wrestler .

In the former ECW he was primarily referred to as the "Innovator of Violence" ( dt : the renewer of violence ) and in World Wrestling Entertainment as Mr. Hardcore .

Private

Thomas Laughlin has been married to Beulah McGillicutty since October 12, 2002 and has two children with her, the twins Kimberly and Brianna Laughlin. Laughlin's daughters were born in May 2004 and in 2006 they were child actors in five episodes of the television series The Sopranos , which ran from 1999 to 2007.

Career

Beginnings

Laughlin began his career in 1989 as Bobby Ocean in the New England- based Promotion International World Class Championship Wrestling (IWCCW). He quickly changed his name to TD Madison and formed a tag team with GQ Madison , which later won the local tag team title three times. He was also the first to be escaped from Jimmy Snuka's finisher Superfly Splash .

In 1992 he changed his name to Tommy Dreamer and worked briefly for the English promotion Century Wrestling Alliance , where he was once allowed to win the CWA Heavyweight Championship .

Extreme Championship Wrestling (1992-2001)

In 1992, Thomas Laughlin was employed by the promotion NWA Eastern Championship Wrestling , which two years later was renamed Extreme Championship Wrestling. There he was quickly considered one of the cornerstones of the league. But originally Laughlin was in the NWA / ECW by fans as "the Babyface with the green pants" compassionately smiled. But that changed quickly when Thomas Laughlin began a bloody feud with the Sandman . At the height of this feud, Laughlin had lost a match to this one, the Sandman beat Laughlin's bare back with his kendo stick . But whenever his manager, Woman , Laughlin asked if he was going to give up now, the latter would turn with the words: “No, sir. May I ask for another (blow)? ”To the Sandman. He beat Thomas Laughlin in a rage that even his kendo stick broke and Laughlin was left lying in the corner of the ring with a bleeding and sore back. Finally, Cactus Jack intervened by storming into the ring and standing protectively in front of Laughlin. He called out to the audience several times: "He's hardcore ... he's hardcore!" And pointed to Laughlin. Since then, Thomas Laughlin has been considered a hardcore wrestler by everyone .

A short time later there was a momentous accident during a show: Thomas Laughlin met Sandman in the ring for a joint promo. According to the storyline, it was agreed between the two that Laughlin would attack his opponent with his kendo stick. When the Sandman threatened Laughlin with his lit cigarette as agreed, Laughlin took it from him and flicked the cigarette in the direction of the opposing face. But the cigarette accidentally hit one of the Sandman's eyes. Thomas Laughlin hadn't noticed this and stole the stick from the painful opponent. When Laughlin struck with this one, the Sandman doubled over at the wrong moment and Laughlin accidentally almost knocked out the other eye. After this incident, the Sandman disappeared for four weeks and could not be reached by anyone. Thomas Laughlin made the biggest reproaches and actually thought about ending his wrestling career.

After the return of Sandman, both went to Japan and continued their feud in the Japanese promotion FMW . Laughlin became known as a renewer of violence , especially in this Japanese promotion , when he was now leading some extremely brutal and bloody matches with the Sandman and Japanese wrestlers.

Starting in 1995, Laughlin led a legendary feud against Raven for a little over two years . In the storyline worked out by Paul Heyman , Raven and Laughlin had been enemies since their school days together. The opponents also fought several times over their mutual friend Beulah McGillicutty . The climax of this feud was that Raven's then valet Beulah McGillicutty was impregnated by Laughlin . The feud between Raven and Laughlin ended in 1997 with a The Loser Leaves ECW match, meaning the loser had to leave the promotion. After a brutal match, Raven lost this match and Beulah became Laughlin's official ring attendant. After this match, Laughlin became active in the then current feud program WWF vs. ECW involved in that after his victory over Raven he was attacked by "Team WWF" (consisting of Sabu , Rob Van Dam and Bill Alfonso) and Jerry Lawler, who surprisingly appeared in the ECW arena , and actually injured by Lawler with a blow to the genitals has been.

Laughlin had actually planned not to win any (!) Title in his entire wrestling career . After various feuds, however, he had to become ECW World Heavyweight Champion in 2000 after removing the title from Taz and giving it back to Justin Credible after only 3 minutes . The reason was that Taz had already signed with the WWF and was therefore not allowed to keep the title. Thomas Laughlin was therefore offended for a long time that an undesired title had been forced on him.

Independent

In the summer of 2001 Extreme Championship Wrestling filed for bankruptcy, so Thomas Laughlin was then active for various independent promotions. So he went to a tournament in the promotion Combat Zone Wrestling and finally committed itself in Puerto Rico in the IWA and in Canada for Border City Wrestling . Laughlin was allowed to win titles in both leagues. Thomas Laughlin could not attend a planned appearance at the German promotion westside Xtreme wrestling and instead referred his friend Fullington .

World Wrestling Entertainment (2001-2009)

In the fall of 2001, Thomas Laughlin signed a contract with World Wrestling Entertainment , where he primarily looked after the next generation of wrestlers. Here he was later able to secure the well-known hardcore title 14 times on RAW . In 2003 and 2004, however, he was used less and less as an active wrestler. Laughlin was therefore hired as a commentator and trainer for the WWE Ohio Valley Wrestling Development League. He was later employed by the other WWE development league, Deep South Wrestling . In addition, Laughlin did various office work for the WWE officials and worked there in the background.

Since the ECW One Night Stand in summer 2005, Thomas Laughlin has been active again as a wrestler and was jointly responsible for the WWE One Night Stand .

He has been a member of the current ECW squad since summer 2006 . From January 2007 he formed the ECW Originals team together with Sandman , Sabu and Rob Van Dam . At Wrestlemania 23, this group was able to prevail against their opponents, the stable The New Breed (then consisting of Elijah Burke, Marcus Cor Von, Matt Striker and Kevin Thorn).

Thomas Laughlin has only appeared on the middle combat map several times at various WWE events. Although he was given the opportunity to play title matches several times, he was not allowed to decide for himself.

On January 13, 2009, Laughlin announced during a broadcast on the weekly ECW show that his WWE contract would expire on June 6, 2009. In this address, he informed the fans that he only had around 5 months to prove that he was not scrapped yet. Should he not win the ECW Championship by then, he would not renew his contract and leave the WWE as a result.

On June 7, 2009, Tommy Dreamer was able to win a hardcore match against Christian and Jack Swagger at the pay-per-view broadcast “ Extreme Rules ” in order to become the new ECW champion. That was the prerequisite for Tommy Dreamer to renew his expired contract with World Wrestling Entertainment.

At the PPV “Night of Champions” Dreamer had to hand over the ECW title to Christian on July 26th, 2009 .

Due to the planned discontinuation of the "ECW roster" by the WWE, Tommy Dreamer asked for the early termination of his current contract. In the course of a specially prepared retirement storyline , Dreamer lost a match against Zack Ryder on December 29th . As a result, Dreamer had to leave the ECW roster as well as the WWE.

Independent / Total Nonstop Action Wrestling (2010-2011)

After his 90-day ban imposed by the WWE, the so-called "no-show clause", Thomas Laughlin joins the US independent scene . Laughlin made his debut for Total Nonstop Action Wrestling on June 13, 2010 at the Pay-Per-View Slammiversary . He played his first match on July 26th against Abyss in a hardcore match. He was a member of the Stables EV 2.0 , which was similar to that of the ECW Originals in the WWE, and feuded against the groups Immortal and Fortune . After only sporadic appearances later, Laughin played his last match for TNA on June 11, 2011.
