The ECW World Tag Team Championship was a wrestling title of the Promotion Extreme Championship Wrestling . As with all wrestling titles, the title was awarded by storyline and not in the sense of a sporting competition. The title was introduced on June 23, 1992 as the NWA-ECW World Tag Team Championship . After being renamed on August 27, 1994, it remained active until the ECW closed on April 11, 2001. The rights are now owned by World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE).
background
Originally known as Eastern Championship Wrestling, the ECW was part of the NWA . There the title was introduced under the name NWA-ECW World Tag Team Championship on June 23, 1992. The first winner was the Super Destroyers tag team led by AJ Petrucci and Doug Stahl , who won a tournament final. With 283 days, the two were also the longest reigning titleholders.
After the separation from the NWA and under the new name Extreme Championship Wrestling, the name of the title was also adapted, which from August 27, 1994 was known as the ECW World Tag Team Championship. As the team with the most title reigns, the Dudley Boyz dominated this phase of the title. Other well-known titleholders were The Public Enemy ( Johnny Grunge and Rocco Rock ), who also had the longest combined reign at 369 days. Other prominent titleholders were Cactus Jack , Chris Benoit , Dean Malenko and Rob Van Dam .
The title was discontinued on April 11, 2001 after ECW was officially closed after bankruptcy. The last champions were Danny Doring and Roadkill. In 2003 the rights to the ECW were bought by World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE), with which the rights to the ECW World Tag Team Championship also went to Vince McMahon's company. In contrast to the ECW Championship, the championship was not reissued as a brand .
