Vincent Kennedy McMahon (born August 24, 1945 in Pinehurst , North Carolina ) is an American entrepreneur, majority owner, chairman and chief executive officer of the media company WWE . Occasionally he also appears as a wrestler, in the role of an authority figure.

Private life

Vince McMahon is the son of Vincent James McMahon . He is married to Linda McMahon and has two children: Shane , who is now chairman of YOU On Demand Holdings, Inc. , and Stephanie McMahon-Levesque , who serves as WWE's chief branding officer . Both also act as officials, so-called commissioners , in front of the camera.

McMahon is a friend and supporter of US President Donald Trump . He inducted this into the WWE Hall of Fame in 2013 . A payment of US $ 18.5 million from the American Action First PAC , chaired by McMahon's wife Linda, to the Republican Party was particularly criticized and viewed as political influence . As a result, in early April 2020, the Governor of the US state of Florida, Ron DeSantis , allowed the WWE wrestling shows to take place because of their "systemic importance" in times of the complete suspension of sporting competitions during the COVID-19 pandemic .

Career as an entrepreneur

World Wrestling Entertainment Inc.

McMahon bought the World Wrestling Federation (now WWE) from his father Vincent J. McMahon in 1983 . Titans Sports Inc. , of which he was president, was registered as a shareholder in WWF . With McMahon at the helm, the transformation from a sports company to an entertainment company began. Wrestling, which was previously primarily sport-oriented and which has been very popular on a regional level since the early 20th century, was expanded to include the show elements that are common today. With the catchphrase "Rock 'n' Wrestling" and the commitment of later superstars such as Hulk Hogan or Bret Hart , McMahon succeeded in making wrestling more and more popular and getting it more attention in the media. In order not to miss the boat, other leagues took over the McMahon concept and also placed their main focus on the framework and show aspect.

The WWF and its big competitor World Championship Wrestling almost managed to overtake the National Football League with their high ratings . After a crisis of the WWF mid-1990s, the so-called "Attitude" era began in which Vince McMahon, who had previously been involved only in official roles, now himself took part in the events and in a feud program against the wrestler Stone Cold Steve Austin occurred . With this step, the WWF regained its market leadership and brought the company a new windfall.

McMahon also managed to list his company on the stock exchange. In 2001 he bought the main competitor WCW. As a result, as a quasi monopolist, however , one had sales problems. Only with the appearance of new, competing leagues did sales rise again.

In addition to wrestling, McMahon has been running a film production company, WWE Studios, since 2002 .

McMahon received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame on March 14, 2008 . For decades, such an award has been given to personalities who have made great achievements in the fields of television, radio, film and music.

On July 18, 2011, Triple H announced on Raw that McMahon had been relieved of his duties and that he had taken over the office of COO , the operational director of WWE. However, this was only part of a storyline as McMahon continues to run WWE Inc.

On January 8, 2014, WWE announced the launch of the video-on-demand service WWE Network in the United States.

Alpha Entertainment LLC

In 2000, McMahon once again ventured outside the world of professional wrestling with the establishment of the XFL , an American football league. The first game took place in February 2001. Founded as a competitor to the NFL American Football League , the XFL was discontinued after just one season, with McMahon's net worth dropping from an estimated $ 1.1 billion to $ 700 million in nine months. With the failed XFL experiment, McMahon also lost his place in the Forbes ranking of the 400 richest Americans.

In 2017, McMahon Alpha Entertainment LLC founded a company separate from WWE . McMahon announced the reintroduction of the XFL during a live stream on January 25, 2018 . On April 13, 2020, the company filed for bankruptcy due to a health crisis.

Since the late 1990s, McMahon also appeared in the ring at irregular intervals. On September 16, 1999, at the age of 54, he won the WWE Championship title from Triple H, making him the oldest WWE Champion. McMahon had several television programs, but mostly worked with the absolute top stars. Several storylines were also knitted around McMahon and his family, which were and are often incorporated into the ring stores.

At the beginning of 2007, McMahon finally started a feud against Donald Trump . This feud, known as "The Battle of Billionaires", aimed to increase media interest in both shows. Both participants competed by seconds ( Bobby Lashley for Trump; Umaga for McMahon) at WrestleMania and Trump won, whereupon Trump was allowed to shave McMahon's hair.

On April 29, 2007, Vince McMahon made at Backlash for the ECW World Champion after a 3 to 1 handicap match with his son Shane and Umaga against Bobby Lashley. On June 3, 2007 at WWE One Night Stand , McMahon gave the title back to Lashley after a street fight .
