Bret Sergeant Hart (born July 2, 1957 in Calgary , Alberta ) is a retired Canadian wrestler and actor . He is one of the most famous and popular representatives of this entertainment sport.

Private life

Bret Hart is the son of former wrestler Stu Hart and his wife Helen. He has seven brothers and four sisters. Six of the brothers became wrestlers, the seventh referee. His sisters also married all wrestlers, including Jim Neidhart and The British Bulldog .

In 1999 the youngest and most successful of his brothers, Owen , died from a failed stunt at a World Wrestling Federation wrestling show .

From 1982 to 2002 Hart was married to Julie Smadu, with whom he has four children. They were the four hearts on his wrestling outfit, as well as the four points that he sometimes adds to his signature.

On June 24, 2002, Bret Hart fell while riding a bicycle and suffered severe head injuries and a stroke . He has now recovered well from his stroke.

In September 2004 he married the Italian Cinzia. But because she refused to move to Canada over the years, they divorced in September 2007. He has been married to Stephanie Washington for the third time since 2010.

In 2007 Hart completed his autobiography, which he wrote using tape recordings that he had made as a diary since the beginning of his career. He dedicated the book to his mother Helen "Tiger Belle" Hart.

At the beginning of February 2016, Hart announced that he had prostate cancer and that he had an operation that same month. After the prostatectomy , he was free of cancer.

At the end of January 2020, Bret Hart announced on his social media pages that he was about to have a basal cell carcinoma (the cause of skin cancer ) removed.

Wrestling career

Beginnings

Bret Hart was on the wrestling team of his school and was able to record his first major national successes there. In addition, he was trained as a wrestler by his father and older brothers while still at school.

When he left the wrestling team of his school, the Japanese Katsui Adachi, Kazuo Sakurada and Mr. Hito as well as Harley Race took over the training of Hart as a wrestler. Initially, however, he was only used as a referee in his father's STAMPEDE doctorate .

After Hart had already played a match against Dennis Stamp in Amarillo in 1976, his official career as a wrestler at Stampede began on September 1, 1978 with a disqualification win against Mike York. Until 1983 he was able to celebrate various titles there. At Stampede Wrestling, he first formed a tag team with his brother Bruce , which was initially portrayed as a villain .

In between, he also joined the German section of the CWA in a catch tournament in Hanover in the fall of 1981 , which was organized by the former wrestler and wrestler Peter William .

World Wrestling Federation (1985-1997)

In 1985 he moved to what was then WWF with his brother-in-law Jim Neidhart . Together they formed the Hart Foundation . This was originally designed as a heel team and was allowed to hold the tag team championship title twice : won by the British Bulldogs in 1987 and won by Demolition in 1990 . After losing the title at Wrestlemania VII against the Nasty Boys , the two parted ways and the Hart Foundation was dissolved. Hart now competed as an individual wrestler and was able to take the WWF Intercontinental Champion title from Mr. Perfect just three months later .

With his likeable manner (before the match, Hart usually gave a child his sunglasses as a present) and his outstanding technical skills (the legendary WWF commentator Gorilla Monsoon nicknamed him “Excellence of Execution”), Hart blossomed into a top crowd favorite of the league and became the new figurehead of the WWF after Hulk Hogan . Bret Hart became WWF Champion in 1992 when he was able to force Ric Flair to give up with his finishing move , the sharpshooter .

Towards the end of 1996, Hart's image change began to heel ("evil") in the WWF, which was finally completed in Wrestlemania XIII (1997) in the fight against Stone Cold Steve Austin . In many promos and interviews, for example, he agitated against the Americans and expressed unconcealed Canadian national pride. According to his own statements, he never really resigned himself to this role, but carried it out out of a sense of duty to the WWF and Vince McMahon .

At the end of 1997 Hart signed with the competitor promotion WCW because the troubled WWF could no longer afford his salary. He played his last match in the WWF against Shawn Michaels , to whom he was connected with real antipathy in front of and behind the camera . Together with Shawn and Vince McMahon, a double disqualification for the title match at the Survivor Series event in Montreal was agreed, because the hitman did not want to lose his title in his home country Canada at such a big event and certainly not to Shawn Michaels. But McMahon betrayed Hart. This incident went down in wrestling history as the Montreal Screwjob . In addition to Shawn Michaels, referee Earl Hebner, a long-time friend of the Hart family at the time, was also inaugurated. Behind the scenes, the situation escalated to the point that Bret Hart hit Vince McMahon in his locker room in a rage in the left eye.

World Championship Wrestling (1997-2000)

Contrary to his expectations, Hart was not promoted in the WCW as he was used to in the WWF. He was also hit by the death of his younger brother Owen (1999).

Hart was tied into the nWo for a while, feuding programs against Curt Hennig and Rick Rude were set up, but ultimately not carried out consistently. In addition, Hart was only used sporadically. So he looked after his own ice hockey team in Canada .

Hart should only get the actual career structure at the end of his WCW career, when he was tied into a feud program with Bill Goldberg . In a match against him at Starrcade in 1999 , he suffered a severe concussion and neck injury from an unfortunate kick that was not properly cured as a result.

Resignation and occasional appearances

After his condition worsened from the effects of the concussion, Hart had to end his active career.

In early August 2005, Bret Hart met at WWE headquarters in Stamford ( Connecticut ) with Vince McMahon and other WWE officials. They agreed on the joint work on the DVD The Bret Hart Story: The Best There Is, Was, and Ever Will Be , which was previously planned under the name Screwed and should contain two hours of material on which Bret Hart, among others, from Hulk Hogan has been described as a "mediocre wrestler" who sometimes worked "quite unprofessionally". But with the coming together of both parties, it has become a documentary that honors and does not despise the Hitman's career. Of course, the final version of the DVD also deals with the Montreal Screwjob , but not very in-depth. Rather, this is done by the documentary Hitman Hart: Wrestling with Shadows , which is critical of the WWF and its dealings with wrestlers using the prominent example of Bret Hart.

In March 2006, Bret Hart took a meet & greet tour through Germany , which was organized by the German wrestling magazine Power Wrestling . Bret Hart was there in Essen , Nuremberg and Berlin .

On April 1, 2006, Bret Hart was inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame along with other former wrestlers , but he turned down the traditional performance at Wrestlemania the following day because he was "true to his word", never again at a WWE - Event to perform. On June 11, 2007 there was a short clip from Hart to the 2007 RAW Draft Special and a few clear words against Vince McMahon .

In November 2009, Bret Hart took part in their European tour as the guest of honor of the Irish- based promotion American Wrestling Rampage . He gave autograph sessions and promos in several European cities.

Return to WWE (2010)

As World Wrestling Entertainment officially announced at the end of 2009, Vincent K. McMahon and Hart had agreed on a commitment for an as yet unknown duration. Due to the state of health, an active participation in Hart as a wrestler initially seemed impossible.

Bret Hart made his first appearance on January 4, 2010 in over twelve years on RAW . The Montreal Screwjob has now turned into a feud program between Vince McMahon and Shawn Michaels on the one hand and Hart on the other. After the official reconciliation between Michaels and Bret Hart at RAW, one between Hart and McMahon should also take place. But this attacked Bret Hart and so now a feud program between Hart and Vince McMahon was written, which found its conclusion at WrestleMania 26 and which Hart was allowed to decide for himself.

The 1997 Montreal Screwjob came to an end on May 17, 2010, as Hart and McMahon had spoken out and reached a consensus in the course of their collaboration. On that day, Bret Hart was able to defeat the then reigning US champion The Miz in front of a home crowd in Toronto, Canada and thus win the WWE US championship for the first time in his career.

A week later, on May 24, 2010, Hart had the title declared vacant as part of the new storyline, as he was now employed as General Manager at RAW . After a newly worked out storyline, Hart was meanwhile attacked by former NXT rookies, so that he had to stay away from the major event WWE Fatal 4-Way on June 20, 2010 . With this, the WWE began to write Hart from the current storyline, as he actually wanted to end the cooperation with the WWE after his appearance in Canada. However, Vince McMahon was able to persuade Hart to appear in front of the cameras as general manager for a while . After the end of this activity, he only made sporadic appearances at WWE.

On October 16, 2010, Hart was honored by Peter Kelly , Mayor of Halifax , Canada . He declared this date to be the unofficial Bret "Hit Man" Hart day. In the certificate, Hart's merits and life for wrestling were recognized.
