The WCW World Tag Team Championship was a tag team wrestling title from World Championship Wrestling . Introduced by Jim Crockett Promotions on January 29, 1975 as the Mid-Atlantic version of the NWA World Tag Team Championships , the championship was merged with the WWF World Tag Team Championship on November 18, 2001 . As is common in wrestling, the award is based on a previously determined storyline .
history
The World Championship Wrestling (WCW) tag team titles have a long history. Some champions included Ric Flair , Dusty Rhodes , the Outsiders ( Kevin Nash & Scott Hall ), Sting & Lex Luger , the Dancing Fools ( Alex Wright & Disco Inferno) and many others.
For several years, several NWA promotions have held their own NWA World Tag Team title. The NWA World Tag Team Championship (eng. NWA World Championship Team) of Jim Crockett Promotions became a tag team title of the Mid-Atlantic region on 1 January 1975. Gene Anderson and Ole Anderson as the first titleholder. The title became the only NWA World Team Team Championship when the last NWA promotion closed in 1982 with its own NWA Tag Team title.
Despite the name, the National Wrestling Alliance did not have a NWA World Tag Team Championship of its own until 1992, when the NWA crowned a tournament to crown the first NWA World Tag Team Champions from all NWA territories. WCW World Tag Team Champions Terry Gordy and Steve Williams won this tournament and became the first titleholders. Since they held both titles, the WCW World Tag Team Championship and NWA World Tag Team Championship were defended together until WCW left the NWA in September 1993. As of January 17, 2008, the NWA has recognized no reign associated with the WCW World Tag Team Championship and officially announced that its title was introduced on April 11, 1995.
In March 2001, the World Wrestling Federation bought the competitive league World Championship Wrestling. WWF President Vince McMahon thus started the storyline invasion of the WCW. At that time the WWF defeated the alliance consisting of the WCW and the ECW . Only four WCW titles remained active during the invasion, including the WCW World Tag Team Championship. At the end of the invasion, the WCW World Tag Team Championship was merged with the World Tag Team Championship . As a result, the WCW World Tag Team title was disabled.
