Career

Beginnings

Martin began his wrestling career under his real name in 1982 when he competed in small independent leagues.

Universal Wrestling Federation

In 1987 Martin received his ring name Shane Douglas in the Universal Wrestling Federation from Booker Bill Watts and won the UWF Television Championship there . But a little later this league was discontinued and Martin went to the National Wrestling Alliance , where he was committed to NWA / WCW.

NWA World Championship Wrestling

After the UWF closed, Martin went to World Championship Wrestling, which at that time was still part of the NWA umbrella organization. In the NWA / WCW he was used in the lower and middle combat map.

World Wrestling Federation I.

In the fall of 1990, Martin made a relatively short detour to the World Wrestling Federation under the ring name Shane Douglas , where he was mainly used in the lower combat map.

World Championship Wrestling I.

Martin returned to World Championship Wrestling in 1992 . This had now separated from the NWA in the meantime and had become the main competitor of the WWF. There he was allowed to hold the WCW World Tag Team Championship in the tag team with Ricky Steamboat . They then got into a feud with tag team The Hollywood Blondes , which consisted of Steve Austin and Brian Pillman . The tag team Douglas / Steamboat had to hand over the title to them. Shortly after losing the title, Martin left the WCW for the ECW.

NWA Eastern Championship Wrestling

In 1993 he came under the ring name "The Franchise" Shane Douglas to NWA Eastern Championship Wrestling and had a memorable appearance there with his valet Sherri Martel : He held an interview with Tod Gordon and Paul Heyman, which culminated in the statement that Shane Douglas was inside one year ECW Heavyweight Champion. He was then allowed to win the regional NWA / ECW Heavyweight Champion title within the scheduled 12 months.

Extreme Championship Wrestling I.

Martin became best known when he worked out a memorable angel with Paul Heyman in 1994 : the then NWA Eastern Championship Wrestling hosted an NWA tournament for the vacant world championship title in the ECW Arena . Martin won this as intended and when he was presented with the NWA belt, he gave a memorable speech. This culminated in the statement that Shane Douglas would not have the title of a dead doctorate and would instead name himself ECW World Champion. He dissolved Eastern Championship Wrestling from the umbrella organization of the National Wrestling Alliance and made the promotion to Extreme Championship Wrestling . By declaring that the regional ECW title was now a world title , Troy Martin officially became the first holder of the ECW World Heavyweight Championship title .

Troy Martin was part of the first squad of the newly formed ECW. He was a member of The Triple Threat label along with Bam Bam Bigelow , Brian Lee , Chris Benoit , Chris Candido , Dean Malenko , Francine , Lance Storm , Perry Saturn, Rick Rude , Tammy Lynn Sytch and Tommy Dreamer . In 1995 he had to give up the heavyweight title and went back to the WWF.

World Wrestling Federation II

After returning to the WWF, Martin was allowed to win the Intercontinental Champion Title on October 22, 1995 . In the WWF he got the gimmick of a teacher named "Dean Douglas". But he had to give up the title on the same evening as Razor Ramon challenged him for it. Martin left the WWF in December of the same year.

Extreme Championship Wrestling II

In January 1996 Martin returned to the ECW. In May he won the ECW Television Title before Martin lost the title again in June. In this title match in May 1996, however, a momentous accident happened: He accidentally broke the neck of his opponent Pittbull # 2's partner, Gary Wolfe. In July 1996 he was allowed to win the TV title again and keep it until June 1997.

Between August 1996 and January 1999 he was able to win the ECW World Heavyweight Champion title twice. Due to differences with Paul Heyman, Martin left the ECW and returned to the WCW.

World Championship Wrestling II

In the WCW, Martin formed a team with Chris Benoit , Dean Malenko and Perry Saturn. But this formation did not have much success in the WCW and so Martin became a member of The New Blood group. During this time he was allowed to win the WCW Tag Team Championship (with Buff Bagwell ), the WCW Hardcore Championship and the WCW United States Title . After the WCW was bought by World Wrestling Entertainment , Martin was not taken over.

Independent I

After the WCW closed in 2001, Martin came to smaller independent leagues such as the IWA Mid-South . After all, he was with the independent leagues for almost 2 years. In the Xtreme Pro Wrestling promotion , Martin was allowed to hold the champion title once.

Total non-stop action wrestling

In 2003 Martin signed a contract with Total Nonstop Action Wrestling . There he was involved in a feud with Raven . In 2004 he became a commentator and interviewer for TNA's weekly TV show, Impact! . In addition to this position, he worked backstage as a road agent.

In June and November 2005 Troy Martin hosted the ECW reunion show "Hardcore Homecoming" in the old ECW arena and tried the WWE and its TV show ECW One Night Stand and their new ECW roster in terms of hardcore wrestling To stand up to.

In 2007 Martin was dismissed from the TNA.

At the end of May 2009, TNAW announced that they had signed Raven and Shane Douglas for some TV appearances. Douglas was therefore used in June of the same year at the TNA-PPV Slammiversary in a match against Daniels, which he was not allowed to win due to his short-term commitment.

Independent II

After his release by TNAW, Martin was still traveling in independent leagues for a while and had in the meantime withdrawn from active wrestling business for a while. In 2012 he became part of the Wal Marts "Check-Out-Boy" trainee program, which he successfully completed in 2013. Martin then became a permanent employee of the company in Philadelphia.
