The World Championship Wrestling (WCW) Hardcore Championship was a wrestling title of the Promotion World Championship Wrestling (WCW). Like all titles in wrestling, the title was awarded as part of a storyline .
regulate
It is a title that was awarded as part of a hardcore match , which means that only a few rules restricted the flow of the match. Weapons, for example, are allowed, neither counting nor the opponent can be disqualified. Grips also do not have to be interrupted when the opponent is on the rope. However, there were a few extra rules during the term. So the fights started for a while in the backstage area, but had to end in the ring.
Emergence
At the 1999 Pay-Per-View Bash at the Beach , a so-called Junkyard Battle Royal took place, at which the winner received a WCW Hardcore trophy. Fit Finlay won this battle royal . However, shortly after the PPV, the trophy was removed from shows. Even this Battle Royal was an accommodation to the hardcore style that was very popular at the time, such as the Extreme Championship Wrestling represented. Even World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) had on November 2, 1998 WWE Hardcore Championship introduced. So the WCW then followed suit. The title was introduced to the shows after hosting some hardcore matches. According to the storyline, the trigger was the rivalry between the two wrestlers Norman Smiley and Brian Knobbs . A tournament was held in which the first hardcore champion was chosen. At the Pay-Per-View Mayhem 1999 Norman Smiley was able to secure the title.
After WCW was in a crisis due to falling audience numbers, the title was rescheduled again in 2000. Terry Funk became the first champion . In 2001, the threatened demise of the WCW could no longer be prevented. After Tonga Fifita (as Meng) was able to secure the title on January 14, 2001 , but surprisingly only one week later when Haku took part in the 2001 Royal Rumble of direct competition WWE, the title was unceremoniously deactivated.
After the WWE had acquired the rights to the promotion, they started an angle with an "invasion" of the enemy wrestlers of the WCW. However, only the two main titles WCW World Heavyweight Championship and WCW World Tag Team Championship were used.
