Knoxville is a US city in the US state of Tennessee with 178,764 inhabitants (according to the last census in 2010, estimate by the US Census Bureau for 2016: around 186,000) and the seat of the county seat . It is the third largest city in Tennessee. Almost 870,000 people live in the metropolitan area of Knoxville (estimate by the US Census Bureau for 2016).
Indya Kincannon has been the city's mayor since December 2019 .
The city is the seat of the University of Tennessee and the seat of the Diocese of Knoxville .

The Tennessee River flows through Knoxville . This is created in the east of the city by the confluence of the French Broad River and Holston River .

history
Knoxville was founded in 1791 and after the war minister of George Washington , Henry Knox , named. When the state of Tennessee joined the United States in 1796, Knoxville was designated as its capital. In 1815 Murfreesboro became the new capital of the state. This remained Murfreesboro until 1826, when she was replaced by Nashville in this role.
Worldwide became famous Knoxville by hosting the World's Fair in 1982. From that time one of the landmarks of the city, which dates sun ball ( Sunsphere ).

Knoxville is just off the I-40 and I-75 . There are several connecting highways in the city, including the I-140 , I-275 and I-640 .
Downtown Island Airport Knoxville is located directly in the city, and McGhee Tyson Airport is south of the city .
Although the city is at a railway junction, there is no longer any passenger traffic.
