Larisa ( modern Greek Λάρισα , ancient Greek Λάρισσα Larissa ) is the capital of the Greek region of Thessaly . It is located in the center of the Thessalian Basin, which is shielded from the Aegean Sea by mountains such as the Ossa , and is traversed by the Pinios River. With 162,591 inhabitants, Larisa is the most populous municipality in Thessaly. The asteroid (1162) Larissa is named after her.

history
According to excavations, the area has been inhabited since the Paleolithic .
The name is probably pre-Greek, possibly from a non- Indo-European language. According to Pausanias , in Greek mythology, the nymph Larissa is the daughter of King Pelasgos . Already Homer calls Larisa " Pelasgian ".
The plain around Larisa is extremely fertile, so the city has been of great agricultural importance since ancient times . The area around Larisa was known for its good horses .
During the Second World War, the German occupying forces encircled the on March 25, 1944 ghettos of Ioannina one. All Jewish residents were ordered to show up at the assembly points within three hours. Under the supervision of the German field gendarmerie and order police , 1,725 people were loaded into 80 trucks and transported to Larisa . After a train ride that lasted a week and was planned by the logistics staff of the Deutsche Reichsbahn , the deportees arrived in Auschwitz .

During the administrative reform in 2010 , the neighboring communities Giannouli and Kilada were incorporated into Larisa. economy
Larisa is the economic center of the agricultural region. Tobacco, fruit, vegetables and cotton are mainly grown here in small businesses. Farsala , Elassona , Tyrnavos and Agia are the agricultural trading centers in the area.
Larisa has been enjoying increasing popularity as a holiday destination for several years, on the one hand the city itself, as a historically attractive center, on the other hand because of the 50 km away, 17 km long beach section on the Thermaic Gulf . Popular holiday destinations for tourists and the Larissaers themselves are Stomio , Agiokambos, Velika and Sotiritsa. Larisa owns the largest ancient marble theater in Greece, which was only excavated in 1989.

The military airfield ( IATA : LRA , ICAO : LGLR ), which is northeast of Larisa, was built in 1912 and was the commercial airport of Larisa until 1997 (National Airport Larisa "Thessaly").
