Philinna from Larissa

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Philinna ( Greek  Φίλιννα Phílinna , 4th century BC) was a wife of King Philip II of Macedonia and mother of the future King Philip III. Arrhidaios .

Philinna came from Larissa in Thessaly . It was probably made around 358/357 BC. Married to King Philip II. It is possible that she belonged to the princely family of Larissa, which means that their marriage may have had a political purpose. Her son Arrhidaios was older than her stepson Alexander (* 356), but due to a mental handicap he was hardly eligible for the line of succession. The assertion that Philinna was a dancer ( saltatrix in Latin ), which has come down to us on various occasions , may have sprung from the propaganda of the Diadoch Wars, which was used to discredit King Philip III. Arrhidaios should contribute.

The assumption of a first earlier marriage of Philinnas, from which a son named Amphimachus was born, goes back to a probably misleading entry in Arrian .
