Kileler ( Greek Κιλελέρ ( n. Sg. )) Is a municipality in the Greek region of Thessaly . With an area of around 974 km², it is larger than the city of Berlin , but is home to just under 21,000 inhabitants. The largest settlement in the municipality is the small town of Nikea (3876 inhabitants), which also serves as the administrative center. The eponymous village of Kileler (481 inhabitants) became famous through the Kileler uprising in 1910, which helped trigger the Greek land reform from 1917.
geography
The Kileler area is located in the center of the Thessalian plain, the 'Greek granary', southeast of the regional capital Larisa . Nikea and Platykambos are both less than ten kilometers from the center of Larisa. The municipality extends to the east up to the slopes of Mavrovouni with the municipality of Agia , in the north the neighboring municipality of Tembi joins. Further south, the northern end of the Karla Lake, which was drained in 1962 and now rebuilt, extends into the municipality, which has its deepest point here at around 55 m above sea level. Rigas Fereos borders Kileler to the southeast . In the south and west of the municipality, small low mountain ranges and ridges rise from the plain. These are the Chalkodonio in the south (Χαλκοδόνιο, up to 725 m ), in the southwest Fylliio (Φυλληίο, 203 m ) and in the west the Mikro Vouno ( 157 m ). Neighboring communities are Farsala in the south and Palamas in the west . The municipality is accessed by the Greek motorway 1 , the most important north-south connection in Greece, which connects Thessaloniki and Athens . Larisa is also on the main line of the Greek railways.
Church history
After Thessaly was annexed to Greece in 1881, numerous parishes were founded, each comprising a few villages. The villages of modern Kileler were divided into a total of seven communities, all of which were named after the names of traditional Thessalonian cities handed down from antiquity: Armenion (from ancient Greek Ἀρμένιον ) around today's Armeni, Fakion (Φάκιον) around Nikea, Fyllos (Φύλλος) around Itea, Kasthanea (Κασθαναία) to Keramidi, Krannon (Κραννών) to Agii Anargyri, Onchistos (to Onchēstos Ὀγχηστός ) to Chalki and Sykourion (Συκούριον) to Platykambos. In 1912 the parishes were divided into many smaller rural parishes. In the course of the 20th century, the names of almost all localities were graced. This was also the case with the village of Kileler, which was renamed Kypseli in 1919, but was given back its old Turkish name in 1985. For the municipality reform in 1997, five larger ones were formed from a total of 35 small municipalities and named after their main town, including the old names Krannonas and Armeni, which had since been transferred to villages. These five parishes were merged on January 1, 2011 with the implementation of the Kallikratis program , with the new parish taking the name of the smallest of the five, namely Kileler.
