Meteora ( Greek Μετέωρα ) is the largest municipality in the Greek region of Thessaly . In its current extent, it was formed in 2011 as the municipality of Kalambaka ( Δήμος Καλαμπάκας Dímos Kalambákas ) and renamed in 2018 after the nearby Meteora monasteries. The administrative seat of the community with 21,991 inhabitants is the city of Kalambaka .

The municipality extends over 1650.19 km² in the north-west of Thessaly, making it the second largest municipality in Greece. The neighboring municipality in the south is Trikala . In the west, on the border with the Epirus region, the municipality extends to the mountain ranges of the Lakmos and Tzoumerka mountain ranges in the southern Pindos Mountains. The Chasia Mountains and Antichasia Mountains lie in the north and northeast on the border with the Western Macedonia region . A few kilometers north of Kalambaka, the rivers Mourgani, Malakasiotikos and Klinovitikos unite to form Pinios, which flows east of the city from north-northwest to south-southeast into the Thessalian plain.
Administrative division
A Kalambaka community has existed since 1946; this emerged from the rural community founded in 1912 and corresponded roughly to today's urban district in its expansion. With the municipal reform in 1997 , the municipality was merged with eight rural communities.
The municipality under the name Kalambaka experienced its current expansion following the 2010 administrative reform from the merger of the municipalities of Kalambaka , Vasiliki , Kastania , Klinovos , Malakasi , Tymfea and Chasia and the rural municipality of Aspropotamos . The administrative seat of the municipality is Kalambaka. The former municipalities have since formed municipal districts. The community is further subdivided into the Kalambaka district and 50 local communities. The name was changed to Meteora in 2018.
