Argithea ( Greek Αργιθέα ( f. Sg. )) Is a municipality in the southwest of the Greek region of Thessaly . It consists of 72 small villages, hamlets and residential areas, of which only eight had more than 100 inhabitants in 2011. The largest settlement is Argithea with 194 inhabitants, the administrative seat of Anthiro with 167 inhabitants.
geography
Argithea is located in the Northern Agrafa Mountains . The summit of the Karava ( 2184 m ) as the highest point in North Agrafa is in the northeast of the municipality; its massif delimits the community from the neighboring community of Mouzaki . The mountain range of Voutsikaki ( 2154 m ) separates Argithea in the east from Limni Plastira , in the south the Delidimi ( 2163 m ) forms the border to the municipality of Agrafa and the region of Central Greece . The municipality is bounded to the west by the Acheloos river , which forms the border to the Epirus region with the Tzoumerka Mountains and the territory of the municipalities of Kendrika Tzoumerka and Georgios Karaiskakis . The lowest point of the municipality is on the Acheloos in the extreme south of the municipality at around 300 m above sea level, here Argithea borders on the western Greek municipality of Amfilochia . At Petroto the Leskovitiko or Petriliotis flows into the Acheloos, it and the Platanias flowing south to it form the deep valleys on the slopes of which most of the villages of the municipality are located.
Church history
Argithea is named after the ancient capital of the same name, Athamania ( ancient Greek Ἀργιθέα ), the remains of which are believed to be in the modern village of Argithea. Two years after the annexation of Thessaly to Greece, it was recognized as a municipality (dimos) and initially existed from 1883 to 1912. The seat of this municipality was initially Koumbouriana, from 1900 Stefaniada. In 1912 the community was split into 20 small rural communities (kinotita). In 1927 the village of Knisovo was renamed Argithea. The 20 rural communities were initially merged into three communities in 1997 (Acheloos, Argithea and Anatoliki Argithea, the latter until 2001 as Dimos Athamanon 'community of the Athamanians'), and finally again in 2010 to form one community, the seat of which now became Anthiro.
As in all of Greece, numerous villages in the Argitheas area were renamed during the 20th century:
