Karditsa ( Greek Καρδίτσα ( f. Sg. )) Is a city and municipality ( Greek Δήμος Dimos ) in southwest Thessaly in Greece .

geography

Karditsa is the seat of the regional district of the same name . The city is located at a traffic junction in the Thessalian plain between Larisa 60 km away in the northeast, 94 km away Lamia in the south, 100 km away Volos in the east and 29 km away Trikala in the north-west. Karditsa is also connected to the railway network (branch line from Athens - Thessaloniki to Kalambaka ). To the west and south of the city, the Thessalian plain merges into a hilly landscape and the foothills of the southern Pindus Mountains , the municipality of Karditsa extends south about 20 kilometers into the mountains and borders the region of Central Greece .

history

The foundation of the fortified settlement falls under the Turkish rule. The settlement was built to protect against attacks by the inhabitants of the Agrafa Mountains. Greek traders soon began using the marketplace. The name is probably derived from the Slavic name Graditsa, which means something like town or small (fortified) town. In 1821 a plague epidemic claimed numerous victims. In 1881 Karditsa came to Greece with Thessaly. In the following year the municipality was elevated to a city.

In 1941 Karditsa was occupied by the German Wehrmacht . On March 12, 1943, Greek partisans were able to take the old town. Karditsa was one of the first liberated cities in Southeast Europe. Today the city is the administrative, cultural and economic center of the prefecture. There is also a branch of the University of Thessaly there .

administration

Karditsa has been divided into five municipal districts since 2011, which formed independent municipalities from 1997 to 2010. The municipal districts, for their part, are divided into city districts or local communities, which correspond to the areas of the municipalities until 1997 and elect their own local representatives. The population figures come from the results of the 2011 census.
