Farsala ( Greek Φάρσαλα , ( n. Pl. ); Historical and still common name Pharsalos , Latin name Pharsalus ) is a Greek city and municipality ( Greek Δήμος Φαρσάλων , Dimos Farsalon ) in the Larisa regional district of the Thessaly region .
history
The area around Pharsalus was the scene of the decisive battle between Caesar and Pompey on August 9, 48 BC. BC, the battle of Pharsalus . Pharsalus has been part of the Byzantine Empire since late antiquity . At the end of the 14th century AD, Pharsalus came under the control of the Ottoman Empire . In 1881 Pharsalos was split off with the rest of Thessaly from the Ottoman Empire and added to the Kingdom of Greece. During the Turkish-Greek War in April 1897, the Greek troops were subject to the Ottoman army and had to retreat further south towards Domokos ; Farsala remained with Greece after the war.

Trivia
In Greece, the city is known for its sweet “Halva Farsalon”, which, unlike the halva known from Turkey, has a jelly-like, translucent consistency.
Farsala is an important traffic junction in the Greek highway network: National road 3 (European route 65) running from north to south crosses national road 30 in Farsala, which runs from east to west . The national road 3 is to be replaced or relieved by the motorway 3 (Odos Kendrikis Elladas). Farsala has a train station and is located on a main line of the Greek railway network from Thessaloniki to Athens.
