Domokos ( pronunciation : [ ðɔmɔˈkɔs ], Greek Δομοκός ( m. Sg. )) Is a municipality in the north of the region of Central Greece .

geography

Geographical location

The north of the Domokos area around Neo Monastiraki lies on the extreme southern edge of the Thessalian plain at about 120 meters above sea level. Here the Thessalonian municipality of Sofades borders on the municipality. To the south and east of the plain, the community is arched through a ribbon of hill country and low mountain range. In the west lie around the Xerovouni Omvriaki and Domokos, in the northeast the area above Petrotos rises to the summit of the Narthaki on the border with Farsala at an altitude of 1011  m . To the south of these mountains, the upper reaches of the Enipeas River and its tributaries form a small plateau on which the southern villages of the municipality are located. This level is south of the mittelgebirgigen southeastern foothills of Pindos from the rest of Fthiotida and the valley of Sperchios separately. These are south of Agios Stefanos the Mega Isoma ( 887  m ), in the southeast the western foothills of the Othrys . In the south (from west to east) the municipalities of Makrakomi , Lamia and Stylida border on Domokos, to the east the municipality of Almyros adjoins.

Settlement geography

Larger settlements in the municipality are Domokos (1,531 inhabitants), Omvriaki (1,210 inhabitants) and Neo Monastiri (1,159 inhabitants).

structure

The 32 municipalities, which existed until 1997, have had the status of local communities (topiki kinotita) since 2011 and elect a council or an individual representative as local representation depending on the number of inhabitants. history

The area of Domokos, like the Phthiotis landscape, was counted as part of Thessaly in antiquity and came under the Treaty of Berlin in 1881 from the Ottoman Empire to Greece. Two years later, the villages of today's municipality were initially grouped into three municipalities, which were named after the ancient toponyms of the area, the cities of Melitaia (Μελιταία), Thaumakoi (Θαυμακοί) and after Lake Xynias (Ξυνίας, near a town called Xynia). In 1891 the province of Domokos was formed from these three communities, which existed until 1997, but was assigned to different prefectures over time. In 1912, these three communities were divided into numerous small rural communities, and individual villages were then given the ancient city names. In 1974 the rural community of Makryrrachi was separated from the Karditsa Province and incorporated into the Domokos Province. In 1997, the rural communities were combined into three new urban communities, which were named Domokos, Xyniada and Thessaliotida (the latter after the ancient landscape of Thessaliotis Θεσσαλιῶτις , which, however, is located in western Thessaly). These municipalities were merged with the administrative reform in 2010 to form today's municipality of Domokos. The municipal area is congruent with the province of Domokos, which existed until 1997 .

As in all of Greece, some villages in Domokos were renamed in the course of the 20th century:
