history
→ For prehistory and ancient history see Thebes (Boeotia)
Already in the 3rd century BC A largely destroyed city flourished again in the Roman Empire and developed into the economic center of Central Greece in the Middle Ages. However, under Ottoman rule it largely lost its importance. During the Greek liberation struggles , it was the scene of acts of war several times and was devastated. It suffered further devastation from earthquakes in 1853 and 1893. Thebes was then rebuilt.
Economy and Transport
The rural middle center forms a trading center primarily for the agricultural products of the surrounding area. Although the city and its surroundings are home to numerous ancient sites, the importance of tourism is low due to the proximity of more well-known attractions such as Athens and Delphi .
Thiva is connected to Athens and Thessaloniki by Highway 1 . The train station of Thiva is situated on the railway line Piraeus and Thessaloniki .
