Ace Attorney ( prosecutor Sass ) is a popular Japanese video game series from Capcom . In Japan, the series is known as Gyakuten Saiban ( 逆 転 裁判 , dt. About: "twist in court proceedings"). In each of the games, you take on the role of a defense lawyer, with the task of proving the innocence of your own client. In addition to the trials, an essential part of the games is the investigation and detective work. Regarding the genre, the Ace Attorney series is both a court simulation and an adventure ( Japanese adventure ). The entire series is considered extremely successful. According to Capcom, more than 7.7 million copies of the series had been sold worldwide by the end of June 2020. In 2006 the game was adapted as a manga , in 2012 a film by Takashi Miike based on the video game series was released and in 2016 an anime series that is also streamed with German subtitles.

Production and release history of the game

Cosplayer dressed up as Phoenix Wright.

The series has its origins in the Game Boy Advance , for which the first game of the series, Gyakuten Saiban , was released in 2001 and only in Japan . This was followed by two more parts by 2004. From 2005 this completed trilogy was re-released for the Nintendo DS , the first part under the title Gyakuten Saiban: Yomigaeru Gyakuten ( 逆 転 裁判 蘇 る 逆 転 ). These new, extended Nintendo DS versions also use the possibilities of the new platform (microphone, touchscreen , both screens) and offer exclusive content. These Nintendo DS games were eventually released in the West under the title Ace Attorney . The first trilogy also includes the name of the main character Phoenix Wright in the title. In Japan, the Phoenix Wright trilogy was also released for Windows from 2005 to 2006 . In 2019 the trilogy was released for the PlayStation 4 , Xbox One , Nintendo Switch and again for Windows.

So far, six parts of the series have appeared in Germany, Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney and its successor Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney - Justice for all and Ace Attorney: Apollo Justice , all for the Nintendo DS. Curiously, the fourth part, Ace Attorney: Apollo Justice , was published in Europe about half a year before the third part. A publication of the third game Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney: Trials and Tribulations therefore appeared to be questionable for some time. However, the game was finally officially announced in summer 2008 by the producer of the Ace Attorney series, Minae Matsukawa, in an interview with Nintendo of Europe and finally in Europe (also with German localization) on October 3, 2008 under the name Ace Attorney: Trials and Tribulations published.

The fifth installment in the series, Gyakuten Saiban 5 , was announced by Capcom on May 22, 2007, although further information was not provided. In addition, the game Gyakuten Kenji ( 逆 転 検 事 ) was released on May 27, 2009 for the Nintendo DS in Japan. It is an offshoot of the main series that deals with prosecutor Miles Edgeworth and investigator Dick Gumshoe. In 2009 this branch was officially announced for the West with the localized title Ace Attorney Investigations: Miles Edgeworth . The game was released in February 2010 in the US and Europe (but only in English). Ace Attorney 5 offers, unlike its predecessors, a complete voice output. For this, the series-typical sound effects were given up. Protagonist Phoenix Wright has a new partner at his side, Kokone Kizuki. The fifth part of the main series was released in 2013 for the Nintendo 3DS.

The spin-off title, Dai Gyakuten Saiban: Naruhodō Ryūnosuke no Bōken , was released in Japan on July 7, 2015. A publication outside of Japan is currently not planned.

The sixth part of the series, Gyakuten Saiban 6 , was announced on September 1, 2015 and was released in Japan on June 9, 2016. At the same time, Capcom announced via the series’s official Twitter account that it would also publish the new part in the West. It was released under the name Ace Attorney: Spirit Of Justice on September 8, 2016 in North America and Europe. In this game in the series, Phoenix Wright, Apollo Justice, Piano Gavin, Maya Fey and Miles Edgeworth appear as recurring characters.

Gameplay

The games are graphically in an anime style. The cases (four or five per game, with only one exception, murder cases) follow a linear plot that becomes more and more exciting, longer, more complex and more demanding as the game progresses. There is a red thread running through all the games. The games are set in an unspecified Japanese city (the US location simply moved the setting to Los Angeles ). At the beginning of the first game, the player slips into the role of the young criminal defense lawyer Phoenix Wright (in the original: 成 歩 堂 龍 一 , Naruhodō Ryūichi ), who has just finished his studies and has no professional experience. Phoenix Wright's first mandate is a murder case and the defense of a friend who is suspected of murder. Much of the game consists of conversations and verbal battles, which should be paid attention to. It is also necessary to investigate directly, for example in the penal institution, the crime scene, etc., in order to find evidence and question witnesses. If you have enough evidence in hand, you can go to the first court hearing. This involves fighting of words with prosecutors (prosecutors) and the judge, and witnesses are cross-examined. In order to expose the lies and gaps in the statements, appropriate or contrary evidence must be presented to the court.

In almost every case, the player has a helper available to support Phoenix Wright with tips on what is going on or a "special skill". The members of the Fey family Maya and Pearl can conjure up the ghost of Mia Fey, among others, who gives him helpful tips, while Ema Skye works as a kind of research assistant or as a police investigator in the course of the game series with fingerprint powder and an X-ray machine . Inspector Dick Gumshoe, in turn, offers the player access to a metal detector or a police tracker dog in selected cases. In all cases, the player also receives a detailed introduction to the handling of the utensils.

The murder cases to be solved are logical, but not realistic. In addition to the somewhat unusual judicial system, in which the accused, on the other hand, has to prove his innocence and witness statements are still valid even after several proven false statements, there are a lot of bizarre and unrealistic comic characters, e.g. B. Phoenix Wright also has to interview a parrot and a ventriloquist's doll. Another central point are supernatural elements, for example certain people in the protagonist's environment become possessed several times by the spirit of his deceased colleague Mia Fey ( 綾 里 千尋 , Ayasato Chihiro ). In addition, from the second game onwards, there is the possibility of using a magatama (a kind of lucky charm) to discover so-called “psychological blockages” in the conversations and, with the help of collected evidence, to break through step by step in order to obtain new information. The personalities of the "normal" characters are mostly depicted a little exaggerated and give the whole series a surrealism that is quite desirable . Some examples of this are a public prosecutor wielding a whip in the courtroom, a hasty judge (due to his slight naivety, this serves as a kind of FAQ , as certain technical terms and facts that the player may not know are occasionally discussed), often extravagant witnesses or suspects, or a simple-minded inspector. But it is precisely this design of the characters and the often amusing conversations that are not insignificant for the success of the entire series.

In terms of play, the series is a classic point-and-click adventure (controlled with the DS stylus) and Japanese adventure (with the typical long conversations and animated characters). From the fourth game in the Ace Attorney: Apollo Justice series ( 王 泥 喜 法 介 , Odoroki Hōsuke ) and the remake of the first three parts for the Nintendo DS, the capabilities of the handheld are fully exploited (microphone, touchpad). Among other things, you have the option of shouting “Wait a minute!”, “Objection!” Or “Take that!” At appropriate points.

To make the game more challenging, the player only has a certain number of unsuccessful attempts during a court hearing or when breaking psychoblocks, which are symbolized by a life bar or exclamation mark (Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney). How much life energy the player gets deducted for a failed attempt depends on the type of error: false suspicions can end the game immediately, while incorrectly presented evidence is "only" punished with about 20 percent deduction. A failed attempt is indicated by the game when the judge pronounces a penalty on Phoenix Wright during the trial. Even when breaking the psychological blockages, the player can lose life energy by showing false evidence. If the life bar is completely empty, the game is over at this point. If the player was in court at the time, the process is lost and you have to start over. If the player tried to break the psychoblock, he also has to start from the beginning and only has one failed attempt left. To restore life energy, the player must successfully break the blockages, then he receives 50% of the energy back. In principle, lost life energy in court is taken over into the investigation phase. In episodes without psychological blockages, the life energy fills up completely by itself with every automatic save point given by the game.

Manga

Since Gyakuten Saiban is very popular in Japan, an official manga series appears there. This comes from the author Kenji Kuroda (known for Cunning Girl ) and the draftsman Kazuo Maekawa (including Shurabaka! ). The series started in 2006 in his - Anthology Bessatsu Young Magazine of the publishing house Kodansha . Furthermore, four summarizing Tankōbons from this Phoenix Wright manga have appeared so far .

A western publication of this official manga series has not yet taken place. However, in 2008 the band Official Casebook Vol. 1 - The Phoenix Wright Files was released in the USA . This volume, originally published in Japan in 2006, offers numerous, mainly cheerful, dōjinshi , followed in early 2009 by Official Casebook Vol. 2 - The Miles Edgeworth Files .

Movie

On February 11, 2012, a live- action film based on the plot of the first game, directed by Takashi Miike, was released in Japanese cinemas. In Germany, the film was shown at the Fantasy Filmfest 2012 and released on DVD and Blu-ray in 2013.

Anime series

The animation studio A-1 Pictures adapted the series of games as an anime television series Gyakuten Saiban - Sono "Shinjitsu" Igi Ari! ( 逆 転 裁判 〜 そ の 「真 実」 、 異議 あ り! 〜 ). Directed by Ayumu Watanabe , while the character design and animation management by Keiko Ōta and Kōji Watanabe . The author was Atsuhiro Tomioka and the responsible producers are Koji Nagai and Masanori Miyake . Kaoru Wada composed the music . The plot of the approximately 25-minute episodes revolves around the first cases of the young lawyer Phoenix Wright, like the games. The crimes often take place in his personal environment and he quickly confronts his rival, prosecutor Miles Edgeworth.

The 24-episode series aired on Yomiuri TV from April 2 to September 24, 2016 . Crunchyroll streamed the series parallel to the Japanese broadcast as a simulcast worldwide outside of Asia, also with German subtitles as Ace Attorney.
