Emergence and expansion

The site was founded in June 2006 by a group of students from the University of California, Berkeley as a community of anime fans and a site for the exchange of videos and fansubs . After a strong growth of the site until the summer of 2007, it was financially supported by Venrock and was able to acquire licenses for content. In addition, illegally uploaded content has been removed and only the respective rights holders can upload series. On August 1, 2008, Crunchyroll Inc. was founded, which was responsible for the operation of the site. Since the beginning of 2009, the site has been streaming the latest Japanese series and films, including initially Naruto Shippūden , Gintama and Skip Beat! on. Shortly after they have been broadcast on Japanese television, the episodes will be offered to subscribers in high resolution via Crunchyroll with originally English and now multilingual subtitles, most of which can be viewed free of charge with a one-week delay. The offer of the freely accessible episodes is mainly financed by advertising. Other current and older series and films were later added to the offer. Crunchyroll has been officially available in Portugal since May 9, 2013 . On October 27, 2013, the Japanese business newspaper Nikkei reported that the Kōdansha publishing house will be offering English translations via Crunchyroll for selected manga from October 30, at the same time as their first publication in Japan. The offer started with 12 titles: Apocalypse no Toride , Coppelion , Fairy Tail , Kami-sama no Iu Tōri ni , Kimi no Iru Machi , Nanatsu no Taizai , Nazo no Kanojo X , Shingeki no Kyojin , Uchū Kyōdai , UQ Holder! , Wagatsuma-san wa Ore no Yome and Yamada-kun to Nananin no Majo .
