The Crunchyroll Anime Award or The Anime Award is an audience award presented by the online streaming service Crunchyroll for the first time in 2017 , which honors anime series and films from the previous anime season in various categories.
history
The award was announced on December 20, 2016 and awarded on January 10, 2017, with the majority of the winners being announced online and the stream of the awarding of the Anime of the Year category on January 28 of the same year from only 500 viewers was viewed. A jury consisted of WWE wrestler Xavier Woods , animator LeSean Thomas and IGN editor Miranda Sanchez.
The second Crunchyroll Anime Awards, however, were given in an official ceremony at the Ricardo Montalbán Theater in Hollywood on February 24, 2018. Erika Ishii and Anthony Carboni acted as moderators for the evening. The award ceremony was shown as a livestream on Twitch . Another innovation is that anime series and films that are not shown on Crunchyroll are now eligible for nomination.
The third award ceremony took place on February 22, 2019. In contrast to previous years, the voting phase was only held between January 11th and 18th, 2019 so that anime series that were only broadcast in autumn 2018 can also be considered for the nominations. The fourth event was announced for February 16, 2020 in mid-November 2019. The categories and the jury were presented in December. The nominations were scheduled for January 10, 2020.
Nomination process
The nominations for the Anime Awards are determined by a pre-selected jury of experts, with possible categories being evaluated first. Previous categories that will not be re-awarded either received little support during the voting phase or were not specific enough. In the second phase, a larger jury of experts votes in two rounds on the possible candidates for a nomination. Points are awarded for this so that twelve candidates remain for each category after the first selection round. In the second round, the jury members can look at individual candidates again to get a better picture. At the end of the day, the jury must come to a common position on the six nominated titles in each category.
There will be a change from 2019 onwards. At the insistence of viewers, it is no longer possible for two characters from the same series to be nominated in the same character-related category. In the previous year, for example, this was in the Best Boy category when Shoto Todoroki and Izuku Midoriya from the series My Hero Academia received a nomination in this very category.
Except for the Best Film category, the following criteria apply to all other categories:
- the series must be an animation series ,
- whose production took place mainly in Japan ,
- shown on Japanese television or in the video stream or simulcast and
- at least one episode has been shown legally in the United States .
There is a problem in this case, that animes that were shown in Japan in the previous year and will only be broadcast outside of Japan in the following year. An example of this was the series Kakegurui , which was broadcast in Japan in 2017, but was only shown worldwide in 2018, which is why the anime series is eligible for a nomination at the third Anime Awards.
criticism
The Crunchyroll Anime Awards have been criticized in the past for the nomination selection process. In retrospect of the first award, criticism and possible electoral fraud were expressed about the electoral system . The reason for this was that the anime series Yūri !!! On Ice won an award in all seven categories in which the series was nominated. The reason for this was, among other things, the differences between the votes cast in categories in which the series was nominated and those in which Yūri !!! On Ice received no nomination.
Jen Corbett of Crunchyroll said in relation to the criticism that they had heeded and worked on the award system. The jury's assessment is given a higher weighting than at the first award in order to balance the votes cast in the public vote.
Still, a similar scenario occurred at the second Anime Awards. This time, the My Hero Academia series won seven awards out of eight nominations. The anime series was only unsuccessful in the Anime of the Year category . This phenomenon was repeated at the third Anime Awards, where My Hero Academia again won in all categories - with the exception of Best Animation .
