Made in Abyss ( Japaneseメ イ ド イ ン ア ビ ス) is a manga series by Akihito Tsukushi , which has been published since 2012. Since 2017 it has also been adapted as an anime .
action
The story is about a young girl named Riko who lives in the town of Orth. This city is surrounded by a huge and enigmatic gorge called the Abyss. Riko is a treasure hunter who one day finds an unconscious android boy in the Abyss, brings him home and gives him the name "Reg" (after a dog she once had). Reg has arms made of metal, which can be extended and in which a kind of ray cannon was built. However, Reg has no memories. During his stay, Riko and Reg become friends. Shortly afterwards, Riko finds a note from her long-lost mother Lyza, which says that she is waiting for Riko at the bottom of the Abyss. Riko then decides to travel to the Abyss with Reg to look for her mother.
The Abyss is a gorge several kilometers long with at least 7 layers in which the journey is made difficult by a curse. When a traveler moves up within the gorge, the consequences vary depending on the shift. These can range from headaches, severe exhaustion, and hallucinations to loss of humanity and death.
Manga
Akihito Tsukushi has been publishing the manga online since 2012. Since then, the publisher has also published the chapters in 7 edited volumes. Volume 6 sold over 34,000 times in the first two weeks.
A German translation has been published by Altraverse since June 2018 in seven volumes. In 2017, Seven Seas Entertainment secured the licenses for the manga and published it in English translation.

Anime
Made in Abyss was adapted as an anime by Studio Kinema Citrus, directed by Masayuki Kojima . The lead author was Hideyuki Kurata and the character design is by Kazuchika Kise . Osamu Masuyama was the artistic director . The 13-part series was shown from July 7th to September 29th 2017 at AT-X in Japan . Within the US , the series was shown on the streaming portal Anime Strike , while outside the US it was broadcast on the streaming portal HIDIVE .
On February 14, 2018, Universum Anime announced that they had secured the German rights to the anime series.

The soundtrack was created by Kevin Penkin . The songs in the opening credits ( Deep in Abyss ) and in the closing credits ( Tabi no Hidarite, Saihate no Migite , 旅 の 左手 、 最 果 て の 右手 ) are sung by the voice actors of the protagonists Riko ( Miyu Tomita ) and Reg ( Mariya Ise ). In episodes 10–12, the voice actress for Nanachi ( Shiori Izawa ) also sings parts of the credits.
