Abelater buechei is a species of the genus Abelater within the click beetles (Elateridae). The species was described in 2010 by Rainer Schimmel and Dariusz Tarnawski using a collection of beetles in a forest area on the Indonesian island of Sulawesi and named after the German zoologist Boris Büche from Berlin.

features

Abelater buechei is only known from male animals, female beetles have not yet been detected. It is an elongated, wedge-shaped and slightly arched beetle with a body length of 4.7 millimeters and a maximum width of 1.3 millimeters. It is brightly colored with a yellowish-brown basic color. The head and eyes are black, the antennae are yellow on the first four basal members and then brown. The scutellum is reddish, the pronotum brown with red front and yellow rear ends, and the elytra are yellow.

The head is densely dotted with circular dents, the gaps are reduced to small folds. The eyes are elongated and only slightly protruding. The antennae are covered with short and bristly hair. They consist of 11 segments and, when covered, barely reach the trailing edge of the pronotum. The second and third antennas are short and cylindrical, both together are slightly shorter than the very long fourth and also each of the following antennas. The fifth to tenth antennomer are significantly shorter than the fourth term. They are spindle-shaped and somewhat thickened apically, they are also slightly keeled in the middle. The last antennomer is long ovoid and bevelled just before the tip.

The pronotum is bell-shaped and the length at the midline is 1.15 times longer than the width at the rear edge. It is slightly arched and almost straight at the sides, but it widens slightly at the base. The front ends of the pronotum are pointed and slightly diverging, they have a short keel that protrudes sideways and reaches the front third of the pronotum. The sides have full keels that bend towards the abdomen after the first third. The pronotum has a dense puncture with flat and slightly wrinkled spaces. The hair is short and brush-like and hardly visible, it decreases towards the middle and to the sides. The scutellum is flat and wedge-shaped, at the base it is only slightly curved. It is straight on the sides and pointed at the ends. The top is flat with fine and hardly noticeable dots, the areas in between are three to four times as wide as the diameter of the dots. The prothorax , mesothorax, and metathorax are also densely covered with a circular puncture.

The legs are slender, medium-long and thin, the femur is thickened and the tibiae are made up of short and rigid bristles. The tarsus consists of five tarsomeres that decrease in size and have a simple claw. He is covered with longer and fine hair.

The wing covers (elytres) are wedge-shaped and flat, after the first third they narrow towards the rear end. The ends are pointed and slightly serrated. The base of the elytra is slightly narrower than the pronotum, it is flat and slightly indented on the scutellum. The front area is slightly arched and raised to shoulders by the wings below . The grooves of the elytra (striae) have simple round dots, the elevations are slightly rib-like and finely dotted. The aedeagus , the male reproductive organ, has a species-specific shape with a median thickened lobe near the end that reaches the ends of the paramers.

Abelater buechei corresponds in its appearance to the Abelater rurukanensts described by Schimmel in 2004 , but can be differentiated from this due to the wider and longer spots on the elytra, the puncturing of the pronotum and the shape of the aedeagus.

Distribution and way of life

There is no information about the way of life of the species. The holotype was collected by the Dutch zoologist Merijn M. Bos in a collection after leaf fumigation for the comparison of a cocoa plantation and a primary forest area in the center of the island of Sulawesi in Donggala in the province of Sulawesi Tengah . The beetle comes from the primary forest. The area is about 750 to 1000 meters above sea level.

Systematics

Abelater buechei was described as a separate species of the genus Abelater within the click beetles (Elateridae). They named the first descriptors Rainer Schimmel and Dariusz Tarnawski after Boris Büche, who made the holotype available to them for identification as part of the collection of Merijn M. Bos. In addition to Abelater buechei, they described eight other species of the tribe Megapenthini from this collection as part of the first description, including Abelater bosi .
