Metathorax

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The metathorax (derived from the Greek meta for "behind" and thorax for "breastplate"), also called the rear breast , is the third and last segment of the chest area ( thorax ) of the insect . Before him come the pro- and mesothorax . All thoracic segments of the insects each carry a pair of legs , in the metathorax these are the hind legs. In addition, the metathorax carries the second pair of wings (hind wings) of the flying insects . This can, however, also be absent or be converted into oscillating bulbs ( holders ).
