action

The Japanese figure skater Yūri Katsuki ( 勝 生 勇 利 ) managed to take part in the Grand Prix final at the age of 23 and met his great role model, the Russian Victor Nikiforov. But Yūri is in bad shape and finished last in the overall standings. Soon afterwards it happened to him in the national championship and other competitions, so that he was dejected and returned home for the first time after five years of study and training. In his hometown of Hasetsu on the island of Kyūshū he is received in a friendly manner by family and friends - he is a celebrity in the town despite the defeats - but initially he retires in his family's bathhouse. Eventually he regained courage and ran a program in the city's ice rink that he had copied from Victor Nikiforov, only in front of his childhood friend. But their daughters filmed him and uploaded the video on the Internet, where his impressive copy of the famous Russian figure skater spreads quickly. Eventually she sees Victor Nikiforov himself. Yūri met him at the banquet after the Grand Prix, where they both got drunk and Victor fell in love with him. Yūri had forgotten the night, but now Victor comes to Hasetsu to train Yūri. This one is excited to be trained by the one he has adored since childhood. But Victor is surprisingly strict, but also open-hearted.

After Victor's arrival, he is soon followed by Yuri Plisetsky. The 15-year-old won the youth world championship, hates Yūri for failing at the Grand Prix final and now wanted to celebrate a successful adult debut under Victor's training - as promised by him. He now demands that from Victor, who suggests a competition between the two athletes. In preparation under Victor's guidance, both have to develop a new approach to figure skating - Yuri less aggressive, Yūri more passionate. Ultimately, Yūri can convince in the competition and Victor remains to be his trainer. They work together to ensure that Yūri wins the Grand Prix next season. At the same time, they get to know each other better.

At the start of the new season, Yūri makes a big announcement that he will strive for victory in the Grand Prix - with the confidence that he has won through his love. He also makes “love” the theme of his performance. First of all, he can easily qualify for the major competitions at the National Competition. Then Yūri meets his friend Phichit from Thailand, with whom he studied together, and other acquaintances at the Cup of China . The Swiss Christophe Giacometti, like other figure skaters, would rather compete against Victor and defeat him than against the Yūri trained by him. Although he can take first place in the short program, he loses all confidence before the freestyle the next day. Victor eventually confronts him that if he loses, he will stop training Yūri. Yūri then bursts into tears. But then he lost all tension that he reached second place.

At the Cup of Russia , Yūri then meets Yuri, who has longed for revenge. Yuri was trained by Victor's former trainer Yakov and has made great strides. At the same time, there is also a lot of pressure on the other competitors who want to qualify for the Grand Prix - only Christophe and Kazakh Otabek Altin have their participation already in their pockets. After the short program that was successful for Yūri, the news reached her from Japan that Victor's dog was sick. He leaves and Yakov is supposed to step in as Yūri's coach. Unsettled by Victor's absence, Yūri can barely qualify - together with Yuri, Phichit and the Canadian Jean-Jacques "JJ" Leroy. When Yūri returned to Japan, he found Victor and his dog healthy. Together they travel to Barcelona, where the Grand Prix final takes place. Before that, they have some free time to visit the city and meet the other Grand Prix participants. In the joint session shortly before Christmas, Yūri and Victor exchange gold rings that Yūri had previously bought to thank Victor for everything. Victor presents them as engagement rings and vows to the others that they will marry if Yūri wins.

However, the short program doesn't go as well as hoped for Yūri. But JJ, who had been very self-assured until then, did even worse. Yuri Plisetsky can take the lead. In the evening, Victor and Yūri talk about the competition and the future afterwards: Yūri wants to part with Victor after the Grand Prix and end his career. Victor is crying and angry that they postpone the decision to the end of the competition. The next day, JJ begins, who has recovered so well from the previous day that he is catching up. Yūri is so motivated in what might be his last appearance that he breaks Victor's world record for the best freestyle rating. Finally, Yuri is the last to step on the ice, who shortly before learned from Victor that his rival Yūri might stop. So he makes an extra effort to outbid him on this occasion and finally wins gold just ahead of Yūri. Together with him, Yūri is on the podium in second and JJ in third. Yūri then decides to continue his career as a coach together with Victor.
