The Tōkyō Kokusai Anime Fair ( Japanese 東京 国際 ア ニ メ フ ェ ア , Tōkyō Kokusai Anime Fea ), abbreviated TAF , also known as Tokyo International Anime Fair , was one of the largest fairs for anime in Japan from 2002 to 2013 . The first fair was held in 2002 as Tōkyō Kokusai Anime Fair 21 .
The chairman was the governor of Tokyo , Shintarō Ishihara . The venue was the Tokyo Big Sight in Kōtō . The mass was always held on four days at the end of March. On the first two days, which are always weekday, the fair was not accessible to normal visitors. It was not opened to the public until the weekend. At the 2007 fair, 270 exhibitors (55 of them from abroad) were present and 107,713 visitors were counted. In 2008, 126,622 visitors were counted, and in 2009, according to their own information, 129,819 visitors, which was a new record.
In December 2010, ten publishers announced that they would boycott the fair in 2011 in protest at a bill submitted by Ishihara. These are Kadokawa Shoten , Shūeisha , Shōgakukan , Kōdansha , Akita Shoten , Hakusensha , Shōnen Gahōsha , Shinchosha , Futabasha and Leed Publishing . As a parallel event against the Tōkyō Kokusai Anime Fair , the Anime Contents Expo was launched, which was to take place at the same time at the end of March 2011 in the Makuhari Messe in Chiba . Because of the Tōhoku earthquake in 2011 , however, both events were canceled at short notice.
After both fairs were held in parallel in 2012 and 2013, they were merged into AnimeJapan in 2014 .
At the fair, both domestic and foreign productions were presented and the Tōkyō Anime Awards ( 東京 ア ニ メ ア ワ ー ド , tōkyō anime awādo ) were awarded. Since 2005, the Awards of Merit have also been presented independently of the trade fair .
Tōkyō Anime Awards
The Tōkyō Anime Awards have been presented annually since 2002. The organizers themselves nominate works ( ノ ミ ネ ー ト 作品 , nominēto sakuhin ) that are intended to stand out from the crowd of animated series and films and that were shown on television or sold on a medium in the previous year. Independent mailings ( 公募 作品 , kōbo sakuhin ) are also included in order, according to the organizers, to promote young talent from all over the world.
The works are evaluated by a jury according to various criteria and several prizes are awarded, each worth up to one million yen . The chairman of the committee is the governor of the capital city prefecture Tokyo Shintarō Ishihara .
